The new BMW 7 Series will use the first modular 6-cylinder engines of the brand

As is the case with its closest rival saloons, each new generation of the BMW 7 Series represents something like a showcase of the latest advances and other novelties the Bavarian brand has been working on. The successor to the F01/F02, which has already been on the market for six years, is expected to be unveiled to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015, and the American edition of Car and Driver has gathered some of these surprises that the next 7 Series holds.
One of them is that the new generation will be the first model of BMW to be offered with the new six-cylinder in-line engines based on the modular architecture announced in 2011. Like the already known three- and four-cylinder variants, these engines will be more efficient and deliver better performance than the previous ones of the same configuration.
The range of the next 7 Series will also include four-cylinder options, one of whose applications will be a hybrid version. BMW will also use a greater amount of carbon fibre in the structure of its redesigned flagship saloon. To do so, it will draw on the experience gained in manufacturing the i electric cars.
Another point in common with them, more specifically with the i8, will be the front headlights with laser technology, which provide twice the illumination of the current ones. As for the design, Car and Driver only states that this 7 Series will be “more sophisticated, more elegant and contemporary“, which reveals practically nothing. We will have to wait until 2015 to see how this saloon evolves.
