The new BMW M3 G80 will share its powertrain with its new siblings: the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M.

The future BMW M3 is almost ready for its debut, which will take place at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Carsten Pries, head of planning for the BMW M division, has already revealed the engine that will power the new beast that will join the legendary Motorsport family of the Bavarian brand.

The new BMW M3 2020 will make life very difficult for its most direct rivals: the Mercedes-AMG C63, the Audi RS4 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. BMW M has made it public that the new M3 will use the same drivetrain as its siblings: the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M.

These models are equipped with an M Twinpower Turbo engine producing 486 CV and 600 Nm of torque, and they are capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. These engines are paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic Drivelogic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive. It is quite possible that this combination will disappoint many of the most purist fans.

All is not lost, though: it is very likely that the new BMW M3 will have a mode that disconnects the front axle, allowing the power to work its ‘magic’ on the rear wheels. It will also feature the electronic steering of the new BMW M5, although it will undergo a modification to adapt to the new weight and dimensions of the brand’s 3 Series.

Carbon-ceramic brakes, an extra edge in braking

The future BMW M3 will fit a braking system consisting of four-piston calipers on the front axle with a 395 mm disc. If extra braking power is needed, buyers can always opt for carbon-ceramic brakes.

The hopes of the most purist followers may not be entirely lost, as some sources suggest the German brand could be developing a manual gearbox for one of the versions of the new M3 G80. Moreover, that potential version would be rear-wheel drive. It may coincide with the launch of an BMW M3 CS, which would focus on offering the driver a more ‘pure’ experience.

The BMW M3 2020 has already been spotted. Some units have been seen driving on the streets, but it is true that they still ‘wear’ a lot of camouflage. These test ‘mules’ are configured differently from the rest of the prototypes of earlier versions.

The bumpers of the new BMW M3 are much more prominent and aggressive. They will have larger air intakes, and its wheels will also increase in size. Another characteristic detail will be its four exhaust outlets.
