The sound, one of the values of the new TFSI engine of Audi

We already know that one of the most important parts is the engine. It is not just a matter of it working properly and being able to offer a good balance of power and efficiency. Manufacturers also strive to ensure that it is attractive to the potential buyer and that driving and feeling each car becomes a true experience. And the sound they make when running can be as valid a factor in the decision as any other element.
Audi is also one of the brands that takes great care over the sound of its engines, so it subjects its powertrains to various tests to make sure everything works perfectly and the desired sound is achieved. The sound of the five-cylinder TFSI engine fitted to the Audi RS3 Sportback has been tuned so that the driver, when starting it, is aware of all the power and versatility this model has.
It is no easy task, since in addition to delivering the sound sought as one of the model’s hallmarks, compliance with all the legislation regarding the acoustics of combustion engine vehicles must be ensured. There is even a person within the Audi organisation who deals exclusively with these matters. The head of Acoustics at quattro GmbH is Steffen Hackmayer, and his job is to get the best possible sound out of the German brand’s engines.

The five-cylinder engine produces 2.5 explosions per revolution, which gives it a very distinctive sound. As in music, it is not just a matter of creating a tone, but of having it enhanced by the different arrangements of the instruments that accompany the main one. And in the case of engines, work is done on the elements that go hand in hand with their operation, such as the fuel intake.
To achieve an acceptable sound, a great deal of work has to be done, and at Audi this is done by trying to make the engine sound pleasant when running at constant speed and noticeable when accelerating. The design of the intake and exhaust ducts is carried out not only to make it work well, but also to produce the most suitable sound. Engineers are responsible for giving these areas the most appropriate shape and the sonority that gives each car its own personal sound.
So, the next time you’re interested in a particular car, pay attention to the sound of its engine too. You will be able to appreciate the work, often hidden, of the professionals who turn the sound of the explosions into genuine acoustic gems.
