The Toyota Hilux electric begins its trials working in an Australian mine

The Toyota Hilux electric that the Japanese brand has launched will begin a twelve-month trial at a mining operation doing heavy-duty work.

There are vehicles that seem unable to enjoy an electric drivetrain, given the work they do. Even so, these vehicles built for heavy-duty work can perform their function with this type of powertrain. The Toyota Hilux showed a sample version with an electric traction system based on the single-cab bodywork, but the brand has wanted to go a step further.

In Australia, a new trial model has just been presented, this time based on the double cab. For a year, it will serve a mining company, carrying out heavy work and putting its electric traction system to the test. On this occasion, it is a pick-up with a double cab, prepared to work in very harsh conditions at the mine.

The aim is to collect all the raw data on the electric vehicle’s behaviour and draw conclusions from it. Based on those conclusions, the current design can be improved and these changes carried over to the production model. With everything obtained, it will be possible to design a Toyota Hilux electric capable of working effectively in the harshest conditions.

Replacing diesel trucks

This sample pick-up will perform functions to replace diesel trucks in some tasks, so that work at the mine does not mean generating more polluting emissions than necessary. The philosophy of this trial is that if the electric Hilux can overcome these challenges, it will be able to withstand any everyday work and conditions, whatever they may be.

Aesthetically, this prototype does not differ much from the combustion-engine model. The charging point has been placed at the front. For the moment, the electric motor that drives this electric pick-up is not known, so we will have to wait some time until the company offers detailed information about this prototype.

It is expected to begin being marketed in Thailand, although it will also reach the European market later on.
