The Toyota RAV4 gets a new look and a plug-in hybrid system, with immediate availability in Spain

Toyota renews the exterior and interior look of the RAV4, with new technology and a next-generation PHEV plug-in hybrid system, a line-up that is already on sale

Several models in the Toyota range are important for the Spanish market, but if one stands out it is the RAV4, a pillar of the brand and one of the models to beat in the Spanish D-SUV segment. In its sixth generation, this model now sees its look substantially updated and reinforces Toyota’s multi-technology approach, with hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions.

Toyota has given the new RAV4 the Hammerhead design language, with a much more striking and modern front end, and a new light signature thanks to the new C-shaped headlights, integrated seamlessly with the new front grille and bumper, which, depending on the trim, can feature different types of moldings to enhance its look and emphasise its width.

From the side, the new Toyota RAV4 retains its characteristic large SUV silhouette, with a roofline that begins to drop almost as it reaches the C-pillar, an area where the two-tone bodywork enhances the sensation of a floating roof. The rear has also been modified: it keeps the smooth-lined tailgate , but this now merges with the new rear lights, which are joined by a central strip, not to mention the new bumper. It is worth noting that Toyota has also introduced specific improvements to reduce noise and vibration in the bodywork, thanks to new soundproofing materials for the floor, doors, roof, dashboard and exterior mirrors.

The interior of the new Toyota RAV4 has also been changed, with a new design for the dashboard and centre console, elements that now feature straight lines and a reorganisation of components, such as replacing the gear lever with a discreet button, or the climate control controls. The main protagonist is now the new 12.9-inch central multimedia screen, which promises to be faster and more agile thanks to its 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, and which debuts the ARENE digital platform.

From the driver’s seat, the driver will find the instrument cluster now positioned lower. Toyota has made this change to improve forward visibility and encourage a balanced driving posture, making the RAV4 the ideal companion for any journey; the PHEV versions will also display specific information on battery charge and electric range. On top of this, the centre console also features USB-C ports, a reversible centre tray and a wireless smartphone charger.

Mechanically, the new Toyota RAV4 debuts a new plug-in hybrid system based on the brand’s 2,500 cc petrol engine. It is offered for the first time in a front-wheel drive (4×2) version with a total output of 268 CV, or in a version with AWD-i intelligent all-wheel drive (4×4), where output rises to 304 CV. As part of this PHEV system is a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, which represents a 30% increase in capacity along with an 8% increase in power, allowing it to travel up to 100 kilometres in fully electric mode. It also accepts charging powers of up to 11 kW on AC, allowing a full charge in three hours, or on DC with powers of up to 50 kW, going from 0% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

On the other hand, if you prefer a conventional hybrid (HEV), the new Toyota RAV4 will still be available with a four-cylinder petrol engine producing 183 CV together with 221 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT automatic transmission. Thanks to this configuration, the RAV4 achieves an excellent consumption of 5.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 117 g/km.

The new Toyota RAV4 will be offered in the Advance, Spirit, GR Sport and Limited trim levels. The HEV powertrain will only be available in the Advance and Spirit trims; the PHEV version can be chosen in the Advance and Spirit trims if you opt for the front-wheel drive version and, on the other hand, the GR Sport and Limited trims will only be available if you have chosen the all-wheel drive version.

It can now be ordered at the brand’s Spanish dealerships, with deliveries expected to begin in early June. The starting price for the HEV powertrain will be 43,500 euros, and the PHEV powertrain will start from 46,500 euros.
