The market launch of the Rivian R2 is now imminent

The long-awaited Rivian R2 is finally about to hit the streets and highways of the United States. The first production validation units, known as Manufacturing Validation Builds, have already rolled off the assembly line at the Normal plant in Illinois. These models serve to complete certification testing, safety and crash tests, as well as final validations before series production begins.

It was RJ Scaringe, the company’s CEO, who announced the news on social media with obvious excitement, highlighting the company’s eagerness to put the first units of this new electric SUV into customers’ hands. Although Rivian is keeping to its official schedule for the first half of 2026, this news has sparked speculation about a possible early launch in the first months of the new year.

Rivian R2 Suv Compacto

After debuting with the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV, Rivian now seeks to sell this new model aimed at a larger number of customers, which will therefore require a much higher production volume. Unveiled in spring 2024, the R2 has a starting price of approximately $45,000, although higher-spec versions with a somewhat higher price will initially be available.

These are Rivian’s future plans for the R2

Initially, all production of the R2 SUV will be concentrated at the Normal plant in Illinois, whose capacity has been expanded to produce up to 155,000 units per year of this model. The construction of a new plant in Georgia, on the other hand, has been postponed for the time being. This decision will allow Rivian to save around $2.25 billion in initial investment. Later, once Georgia comes online, total capacity could grow by another 400,000 units per year if demand requires it.

Rivian R2 00003

As we have already reported here at HighMotor in an earlier post, 2025 has not been an especially good year for Rivian. The company delivered just over 42,000 vehicles over those twelve months, an 18 percent decline from the previous year. The drop in sales was especially pronounced in the final quarter of the year, as a result of the elimination in the United States of the federal tax credit that encouraged sales of electric models.

Rivian R2 Back

The company hopes, however, that things will go much better in 2026 with the launch of the new R2. A model that, being much more affordable, should sell far better.
