The Volkswagen Touareg will return in a fully electric version built on the SSP platform

The Volkswagen Touareg with a combustion engine seems to have its days numbered, but this iconic SUV from the German brand will not disappear in the long term. A new fully electric model is on its way.

Just a few weeks ago, it was announced that Volkswagen plans to remove its emblematic Touareg model from its range in 2026. But no one should panic, because the legendary Volkswagen SUV, currently available with a combustion engine or as a plug-in hybrid, could return shortly afterwards with an electric propulsion system. It will possibly be the first model to use the new SSP platform of the Volkswagen Group.

Although some earlier reports suggested that this platform would debut with the ID. Golf or the ID. Roc, both assembled at the main Wolfsburg plant, the foreseeable delay in the market launch of both models could open the door for the SSP platform to debut with the future ID. Touareg.

Ending production of the combustion-engine Touareg at the Bratislava plant will allow Volkswagen to get to work adapting these facilities for the start of production of vehicles based on the SSP platform. According to some German media, the new assembly line could be ready by 2029, which would position a potential ID. Touareg as the group’s first model to use this platform.

On the other hand, it should be considered that premium vehicles are more profitable for manufacturers, and a high-end electric SUV could generate more revenue for Volkswagen, so an early launch would be of particular interest to the company.

Porsche has opted for a different path with the new Cayenne

At present, the combustion-engine Touareg shares its platform with the Audi Q7, the Porsche Cayenne, the Lamborghini Urus and the Bentley Bentayga. However, the upcoming electric Cayenne, which will arrive in 2026, will be based on the PPE electric platform, developed jointly by Audi and Porsche, and not on the SSP, which will not yet be ready by then. This PPE platform is already used in models such as the Porsche Macan and the Audi Q6 e-tron.

The SSP platform, officially presented in 2021, has been developed to cover everything from compact vehicles to luxury models. One of its standout features is that it will feature an 800-volt architecture that will allow faster charging and improve efficiency. It is also worth noting that this platform aims to reduce production costs by 20 percent compared with the MEB and PPE platforms, thanks to the use of common components that simplify production.
