The Volvo XC60 updates its engine range and restructures the available trim levels

Volvo introduces immediate updates to its successful XC60, with new mild-hybrid engines and the elimination of others, plus new trim levels and available options

The second generation of the Volvo XC60 began its journey three years ago, a period the brand has used up to the present to keep updating its mid-size SUV with new equipment but, perhaps more importantly, with new engines that have made the XC60 much more efficient and cleaner. Volvo continues to update the XC60 and in 2020 it carries on along that path to be cleaner, restructuring the available trim levels and adding new options.

New Volvo XC60 Recharge

The Volvo XC60 range is expanded with the new Recharge variant, a name you will already recognise as it is the one the Swedish brand uses for its fully electric or plug-in hybrid models, as is the case with the XC 40 Recharge presented last autumn. Volvo’s aim with this move is to give its cleanest models greater visibility, thereby encouraging the purchase of these more environmentally friendly models.

The XC60 Recharge engine range uses Volvo’s Twin Engine technology, made up for this model of the already familiar T8 Twin, which delivers a combined system output of 303 CV, with a combined consumption of around 2.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 66 g/km; and of a new plug-in hybrid engine called the T6 Twin, which provides a combined system output of 253 CV, with the same consumption and emissions figures as the previous one. Both powertrains can be chosen for the Inscription and R-Design equipment levels, both inside and out.

Goodbye to the T4 petrol engine

As you know, Volvo is a brand very concerned about climate change and the need for mobility to be cleaner and more sustainable, which is why it offers mild-hybrid technology as a minimum for its petrol and diesel engines. In this way, combustion engines are gradually disappearing from the brand’s line-up, so we now have to say goodbye to the well-known T4 petrol, whose place will be taken by the B4 mild-hybrid petrol engine.

This B4 mild-hybrid petrol engine delivers the same output as its diesel sibling, the B4 mild-hybrid diesel introduced in the last update the XC60 received, namely 197 CV, achieving a combined consumption of around 6.1 – 7.2 l/100 km and CO2 emissions ranging between 167 and 196 g/km under the WLTP cycle. Besides this B4 petrol engine and its diesel sibling, as well as the T8 Twin and T6 Twin mentioned above, the XC60 range will continue to keep the two traditional D3 diesel engines with 150 CV and the D4 diesel engine with 190 CV.

Restructured trim levels and new optional extras

With the arrival of these new engines, Volvo has taken the opportunity to restructure the XC60’s trim range, which will now consist of the Momentum, Momentum Pro, Inscription and R-Design versions. Depending on their standard equipment or the options we choose, these will benefit from improvements such as those made to the Head-Up Display, now with greater sharpness and contrast; the 12 V socket on the centre console is replaced by a dual-input USB-C; the Bower & Wilkins sound system is improved and, across the whole range, the “protection key” is introduced, for which a maximum speed can be configured, and which is characterised by its orange colour.

The optional equipment list for the Volvo XC60 also brings new additions, as new items are included such as the alcohol-interlock device, heated windscreen, wireless charging pad, Sport chassis and the Clean Zone multi-filter with particle sensor, which removes particles and pollutants present inside the cabin.

With these updates, Volvo wants the XC60 to remain the best-selling model in its line-up, and indeed in 2019 it reached 204,965 units, so all these novelties are now available when you order your new XC60, with a starting price for the range of 43,350 euros.
