Xiaomi’s automated factory is one of the most advanced in the world, and the brand wants us to see it, thanks to the launch of a video showing it

In 2021, the telephony and communications brand Xiaomi announced that it wanted to enter the automotive market. To do so, it proposed a saloon model called SU7, which it planned to sell shortly afterwards. Several years have since passed, and this model has become a reality, despite the bad omens surrounding the brand’s ability to bring this milestone to a successful conclusion.

But to manufacture this model under the necessary conditions, Xiaomi had to build a factory capable of meeting the company’s requirements. According to the company itself, orders for the Xiaomi SU7 have reached 75,000 units. This requires manufacturing high-tech cars in a very short time to meet delivery deadlines.

Xiaomi’s factory

To meet everything the brand demands, Xiaomi has built a technologically very advanced factory, capable of very high production of this model and others that could follow. It is located in Yizhuang, Beijing, and the brand has released a video so we can witness how the manufacturing process works.

According to the plant’s managers, a fully assembled car ready for sale rolls off the assembly line every 76 seconds. To achieve this feat, Xiaomi has applied its entire technological experience to create a robotized plant that handles most of the vehicle assembly work.

The first step takes place in the plant’s hyper-casting area. Here the largest parts of the vehicle are stamped quickly and efficiently. Then robots take charge of welding all these parts and shaping the vehicle, applying all the necessary welds and adhesives. A laser scans each part and checks that it is correct for use in assembly. These parts are moved by automated systems, so no human operators are needed, which makes assembly more efficient and improves its efficiency.

The robots handle most of the work and do so very efficiently and quickly. However, human operators are always required, although in this case they have chosen not to show them in the video accompanying this article. The interior assembly is part of the work that still requires human hands.

When the car is complete, the automated line itself takes it off the assembly line and parks it in the corresponding area, where it waits to be transported to its destination, into the hands of its new owner.
