Toyota GR Supra 2021: Better with 4 or 6 cylinders?

Alongside the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 with 340 CV, the renewed range of the Japanese sports coupé now includes a 4-cylinder version with 258 CV, available from 50,900 euros.

It loses two cylinders and 82 CV, but Toyota puts its GR Supra within easier reach of sports car enthusiasts with the introduction of the new Pure 2.0 Turbo version, which costs almost 15,000 euros less than the six-cylinder 3.0 Turbo. And it is not the only novelty the 2021 Supra range brings, just a year and a half after its arrival on the market. Though it is certainly the most important.

2.0 Turbo engine with 258 CV

Like the 3-litre six-cylinder, the new 2.0-litre four-cylinder version also features forced induction via a turbocharger, and it is paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It sends its 258 CV to the rear wheels and produces a maximum torque of 400 Nm between 1,550 and 4,400 rpm. Its final weight, of practically 1,400 kg, is about 175 kg lower than the six-cylinder version.

Having two cylinders fewer and less power does not stop the GR Supra 2.0 Turbo from offering outstanding dynamic qualities and the performance you expect from a true sports car: 5.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h, with the top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

That said, the GR Supra 3.0 Turbo shows its power and is almost a second quicker, stopping the clock at 4.3 seconds in the short sprint. The four-cylinder has a homologated combined consumption of 7.3 l/100 km, compared with 8.1 l/100 km for the six-cylinder. The choice is therefore clear: if you want pure performance, go for the six-cylinder. And not only for the figures, but also for the chassis equipment, as we will see later. But if you want to save a good chunk on the starting price, the new 4-cylinder version will give you plenty of enjoyment.

This version has as its direct rivals the Audi TT Coupé, especially in its 45 TFSI S tronic version, which has 245 CV and a price from 51,630 euros. An Alpine A 110 Pure (curiously it has the same trim name as the new entry version of Toyota, as we will see), with 252 CV, starts from 58,500 euros.

Two trim levels, one for each engine

Another novelty of the new GR Supra 2021 range is that each engine is paired with a trim: Pure for the 2.0, and Performance for the 3-litre.

The entry version, the GR Supra Pure, already offers LED headlights, 18-inch wheels with 255/40-18 tyres on the front axle and 275/40-18 on the rear, heated sports seats, TFT instrument cluster with an 8.8-inch screen, the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with a touchscreen, also 8.8 inches, and the Toyota Supra Safety safety systems package.

This Pure version can be fitted with the optional Touring Pack, priced at 6,000 euros, which adds a limited-slip rear differential, adaptive suspension, more powerful brakes with four-piston calipers in red, and connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Performance version, which has no mechanical changes, comes with this package as standard, and adds to the Pure equipment a dual-outlet rear exhaust in stainless steel, sport pedals, interior trim in carbon fibre, front and rear parking sensors, navigation, the Toyota Connect connectivity services and a specific audio system with 10 speakers, plus Bi-LED headlights and electric seats. In this case the wheels are 19 inches, with 255/35 tyres at the front and 275/35 at the rear axle.

With the arrival of the new 4-cylinder version, the six-cylinder GR Supra drops its price by 3,000 euros compared with the previous range. This is how the sports coupé line-up from Toyota now stands.

  • GR Supra Pure 2.0 Turbo 258 CV: 50,900 euros
  • GR Supra Performance 3.0 Turbo 340 CV: 66,900 euros

However, the almost 15,000 euro difference between the two versions gives you enough to fit the Touring Pack on the 4-cylinder… and you would still save 9,000 euros, which is not bad at all.
