Toyota MR2, will it return to keep the Toyota Supra company?
The Japanese brand could bring back the legendary Toyota MR2, and it would be powered by a hybrid or fully electric powertrain.

The Japanese brand has recently revived one of its most coveted flagship models: the Toyota Supra we tested at the Jarama Circuit but now everything points to it possibly doing the same with the Toyota MR2. For now, there seems to be nothing set in stone, but some sources have already claimed that the legendary Japanese sports car could return in the not-too-distant future and fulfil Akio Toyoda’s dream of having a line of sports cars made up of three different models.
The details are very limited, but some reports suggest the car could not arrive before 2024 at the earliest. That date is still far off, and little more is known about the possible rebirth of the Toyota MR2.

Toyota has partnered with BMW to develop the new Supra and with Subaru for the GT86. With these facts in mind, everything points to the resurrection of the Toyota MR2 possibly involving a partnership with another car manufacturer. This claim is still unclear, although the same is true of the powertrain that will bring the legendary Japanese sports car to life.
The Japanese brand had previously stated that it intended to offer an electrified version of all its models by 2025, so given this circumstance, it is very likely that the Toyota MR2 will be offered, at least, with a hybrid powertrain. Of course, there is also the possibility of a variant with a conventional engine and even the possibility that the car could be fully electric.

Toyota MR2, a reality in 2024?
If the model finally reaches production and uses its real name, it is likely to embody some of the qualities that made the original model so great. In addition, it has every chance of being a very lightweight sports car with sporty handling and an elegant design.
Electric cars are not known for being particularly light, and that would definitely be a challenge if Toyota decided to take that route. However, the publication seemed to suggest that this is the most likely option and even mentioned the possibility that the new Toyota MR2 could be positioned against a rival from a future electric Porsche Boxster or even an electric Porsche Cayman.

This seems somewhat strange, since Toyota has already ‘sold’ the Toyota Supra as a competitor to the Porsche Cayman, but some sources already claim that the future Toyota MR2 would cost less than $45,000, assuming it finally reaches the market.

The Toyota MR2 is a sports car that hit the market in 1985 and remained available until 2005. Three generations of Japanese sportiness have not been enough for fans of this type of vehicle. Akio Toyoda has always spoken of his wish for the “three brothers” to replicate the brand’s trio of sports cars from the 1980s. In this way, the Toyota Supra would already be occupying its position, then the Toyota GT86 would take the place of the legendary Toyota Celica, leaving the third spot open… will it be the Toyota MR2?
