Volvo is developing a new electric truck with a range of 600 km

The long range and cargo capacity of Volvo’s upcoming electric truck promise to revolutionise the long-haul freight transport sector in Europe.

Volvo Trucks has revealed some interesting details about its upcoming new electric truck for long-haul transport, the FH Aero Electric, whose launch is planned for the second quarter of 2026. With this model, the Swedish manufacturer promises to completely revolutionise the sector, offering for the first time a range of up to 600 kilometres, as well as a load capacity comparable to that of a conventional diesel truck, with a gross combined weight of up to 48 tonnes in markets that allow it.

The FH Aero Electric incorporates the innovative e-axle, a system that integrates electric motors and transmission into the rear axle, freeing up space to house up to eight battery packs, with a total capacity of 780 kWh, the largest in a series-production truck to date. Although the usable capacity has not been specified, it is estimated that each pack has approximately 97.5 kWh, exceeding the 90 kWh of the six packs used in the current FH Electric.

A standout feature of the FH Aero Electric is its fast-charging capability, fitted as standard with the MCS standard with one-megawatt charging, which allows the battery charge level to go from 20 to 80 percent in about 40 minutes. Volvo states that this is precisely the duration of the mandatory driver rest breaks in the EU, thereby maximising productivity.

Furthermore, the aerodynamic design of the FH Aero Electric includes a cab meticulously developed to maximise efficiency, almost sealed at the front, with minimal air intakes and a camera system instead of wing mirrors. It also features side skirts and an additional liftable, steerable axle, which improves weight distribution and allows a load capacity similar to that of diesel trucks.

Although its launch was initially expected in 2025, Volvo has postponed it by a few months. The Swedish manufacturer now plans to open orders next year, 2026. Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks, has highlighted the importance of this truck for the company he leads, as it represents a crucial step forward in zero-emission transport, combining high cargo capacity, ultra-fast charging and extended range, making it a fully viable alternative to diesel trucks for many companies in the sector.
