BMW i6: this is what the brand's next electric coupé will look like
The BMW i6 will arrive in 2024 to compete with the upcoming premium electric models on the market, with outstanding credentials: more than 500 CV and up to 700 km of range
Electric mobility is becoming increasingly present, which is why this year has seen the arrival of models such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC or the Audi e-tron that we have already been able to test. This year, which is about to come to an end, has had a common denominator in this respect: most of the electric cars launched have been SUVs.
However, upcoming new releases will no longer be tied to this format; instead, they will be sporty saloons that promise to stir passions even among the most sceptical. The Porsche Taycan has been one of the most talked-about new arrivals in 2019, and rivals such as the Audi e-tron GT or the Mercedes-Benz EQS will arrive to make life very difficult for the first electric car from the Stuttgart maker.
Today we are not going to talk about any of these; instead, we are going to focus on the rooster that was missing from this barnyard. Didn’t you miss a brand in all of this? Indeed, one was missing BMW.
The Munich firm has an ambitious electric vehicle development project, so models such as the BMW iX3, BMW iNEXT or the BMW i4 will begin to set the standard in this emerging market before 2021.
The BMW i6 will be the brand’s next launch
We have no details beyond 2022, although everything suggests that the next model to arrive will be the BMW i6, the model that will try to dethrone all the rivals we have mentioned above.
According to various reports, everything indicates that the BMW i6 will arrive in 2024 and will be something like the electric counterpart of the BMW 8 Series, from which it will adopt some design lines as well as its Gran Coupé nature.
There are also rumours about its electric powertrains: it seems the BMW i6 may feature two electric motors, one on each axle, and therefore have all-wheel drive. The front could produce 204 CV and the rear would add another 340 CV, so the combined output would be no less than 544 CV.
There may be an M Performance version
Following the rumour mill, it is claimed that the magic wand of M Performance could touch the BMW i6. Should the brand’s performance department do so, this radical version would fit two 335 CV motors, bringing the total output close to 650 CV.
As for the batteries, it seems the BMW i6 will arrive with two available battery packs: one with a capacity of 90 kWh and another of 120 kWh. With these, it should be able to exceed 500 kilometres of range in both cases and even reach 700 kilometres with the most powerful version.
As we said before, all this information is far from definitive, so we will have to wait to learn the final details of the BMW i6. However, it seems we are at the start of the electric era and that, thanks to models like this, driving enthusiasts won’t have to miss the petrol stations.
