The new BMW i6 could put the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT on the ropes
The BMW i6 could become the new member of the Bavarian brand’s electrified family. It would arrive in 2024 with a power output close to 600 CV.
BMW is preparing to launch a range of electric vehicles, including the BMW iX3, the BMW iNext and the BMW i4. All three models will be introduced before the end of 2021, but we can expect more electric vehicles in the future.
Little is known about the company’s plan beyond 2022, but a new report suggests it could include a BMW i6 to take on the Audi e-tron GT, the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the Porsche Taycan.
Some sources have claimed the BMW i6 will arrive in 2024 and will be an elegant electric car that takes some cues from the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé. This implies the future BMW i6 will be a four-door coupé, which seems logical given the expected competition.
While specifications should be taken with a grain of salt, the report says the next entry-level BMW i6 will be equipped with two electric motors. According to reports, the front motor will produce 150 kW / 204 CV, while the one located at the rear will offer a power output of 250 kW / 340 CV. This configuration would give the BMW i6 all-wheel drive and a combined output of 400 kW / 544 CV.
The BMW i6 could go head-to-head with the Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan.
There is also news of an M Performance variant that would use two electric motors with 250 kW / 340 CV each. This would give the high-performance model an output close to that offered by one of its rivals, the Taycan Turbo with 500 kW / 680 CV.
As for the batteries, the BMW i6 will be offered with two options. The smaller one is said to be a 90 kWh battery providing a range of roughly 560 km on what we can assume is the WLTP cycle. The report also says there could be a larger 120 kWh battery, which increases its fully electric range to 700 km.
In 2024, the new BMW i6 could make its debut as an unprecedented electric sports sedan. It is very likely to be the production version of the BMW i Vision Dynamics concept, shown at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The BMW i6 will be the only model from the Bavarian manufacturer in its own right with electric propulsion, as the already planned BMW i1, i4 and i7 will represent the respective “zero emissions” versions of the BMW 1 Series, 4 Series Gran Coupé and 7 Series. In addition, the BMW iX2, iX3 and iX5 models, or the electric versions of the BMW X2, X3 and X5, will also debut. As for current models, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid supercar will be launched in 2020, while the farewell of the BMW i3 city car has been postponed to 2024.
