BMW M135 xDrive road test: we try out BMW's premium compact that takes on the best

With 300 CV in its M135 xDrive version and a completely renewed design, the fourth generation of the BMW 1 Series arrives more agile, efficient and technological than ever

We have had the chance to get behind the wheel of the renewed BMW 1 Series, a car we all recognise and whose first versions were the Coupé and Cabrio, which later became the 2 Series. This iconic model in the premium compact segment was launched in 2004 and now debuts its fourth generation with a complete package of innovations in design, sportiness, efficiency and technology.

Since the start of its sales, more than 177,000 units have been sold, with an incredible 80% share in Europe. This new chapter, which celebrates the model’s 20th anniversary, will be available on the market from October 2024 with five powertrains, including mild-hybrid engines that earn it the DGT ECO label.

Renewed exterior design

The new 1 Series adopts new dynamic, sporty proportions with features very similar to its bigger brother, the BMW 2 Series. Its bodywork has grown slightly, reaching 4,361 mm in length, with a lower and more aggressive front end that reinforces its sporty character. The BMW radiator grille, wider and with oblique and vertical slats that appear horizontal on the M Performance versions, together with the optional adaptive matrix LED headlights, redefine the front-end look.

For the first time, the 1 Series offers a glossy black contrast-colour roof, which accentuates its sporty profile. Its rear view, with a more muscular design, incorporates vertical reflectors and a diffuser-style insert; however, we can forget about the xDrive badge on the rear (for the all-wheel-drive versions).

The air intakes have also been redesigned to cool the brakes more effectively, and the diffusers, both front and rear, have increased in size. The bodywork and chassis are now stiffer and, in addition, in the M135 version we find several reinforcements thanks to the M Adaptive suspension. This version also includes four real 90 mm diameter exhaust tips.

Engines:

The BMW 1 Series introduces revised engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, which improve ride comfort, consumption and efficiency. All versions include a 7-speed dual-clutch Steptronic gearbox as standard:

  • BMW 116: Three-cylinder petrol engine with 90 kW (122 CV), 230 Nm of torque and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.8 seconds. €34,100
  • BMW 120: Three-cylinder petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology and 125 kW (170 CV), accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.
  • BMW 118d: Four-cylinder diesel engine with C label, 110 kW (150 CV) and a 0-100 km/h time of 8.3 seconds.
  • BMW 120d: Four-cylinder diesel engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology and 120 kW (163 CV) with an acceleration time of 7.9 seconds.
  • BMW M135 xDrive: Four-cylinder engine with 300 CV, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds thanks to its 400 Nm of torque. It includes intelligent all-wheel drive and an M adaptive chassis for maximum precision in corners.

The top model, the BMW M135 xDrive, is also offered with an exclusive M Technic package, which includes M Compound brakes and 19-inch forged alloy wheels, standing out as the sportiest in its class.

There are three trim levels available: Base, M Sport and M Sport Pro. In Spain there will be a fourth trim level called N Sport Design, which includes the sport package on the outside but not on the inside and represents an extra €1,300 over a 116.

Premium connected interior

Leather-free materials are standard, with recycled options such as Econeer or Veganza that look similar to leather; the only leather we find is on the sports steering wheels. The heated seats with optional massage function and the increase in interior space make it a benchmark for comfort.

The BMW Curved Display system, which combines a 10.25-inch instrument cluster with a 10.7-inch central touchscreen, is designed to offer an intuitive digital experience. The integration of the new BMW iDrive based on the BMW Operating System 9 allows quick access to key functions, touch control and remote updates.

Automated driving and parking

The BMW 1 Series incorporates Driving Assistant as standard, which includes systems such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition. Optionally, drivers can choose the Parking Assistant Professional, which allows manoeuvres to be controlled from a smartphone, or the advanced lane control assistant.

It also features the BMW Digital Key Plus, which allows you to unlock and start the car from a smartphone or Apple Watch. In addition, the BMW Digital Premium package offers access to entertainment apps and functions such as digital payments from the vehicle.

Chassis and driving

The improved body rigidity and the optimisation of the chassis kinematics ensure a precise and exciting driving experience. Key features include:

  • M adaptive chassis, which lowers the vehicle’s ride height by 8 mm.
  • Front wheel castor increased by 20%, for greater stability.
  • Light alloy wheels of up to 19 inches, available as an option.

The addition of integrated brakes and an advanced slip-limiting system improve safety and control in any situation.

Impressions

The sensations this model delivers are enough to make you think there are still brands betting on those sporty touches that are nonetheless useful for urban environments or family trips. The quality is noticeable from the moment we climb into its bucket-type seats, which hold you well, are comfortable and perform perfectly on twisty roads.

The steering wheel is another aspect that left me with a very good impression. We have a thick, ergonomic steering wheel that is very comfortable to grip and perfectly conveys the feel of the road. We are talking about firm and very precise steering, which is rather rare these days. But if I had to find one fault, it is that the gearshift paddles are made of plastic rather than aluminium.

What can I tell you about its engine: it works wonderfully. I only had the chance to try the top-of-the-range version with 300 CV and I found no fault in how it works; the 7-speed automatic gearbox is ultra fast. It responds perfectly, the sound is pleasant and natural, and the paddle shifters are just what is needed to put a smile on our face. That said, it has an official consumption of around 7.5 litres per 100 km, and during our test, being generous with the accelerator, we recorded a consumption of around 9.2 litres per 100 km.
