Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition: only 90 units for Japan

The Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition is a limited run of 90 units that will be sold exclusively in the Japanese market

The Tokyo Auto Salon closed its doors a few days ago, but we are still digesting some of the novelties we saw at the Japanese show. There were quite a few, although we highlight the uncertainty generated by the reinterpretation of the Honda S2000 and our eagerness for the concept of the Subaru Levorg STI to reach our market.

General Motors does not have a large presence in the Japanese market, so it decided to bring out an exclusive novelty for the country. In fact, the models that sell best are the SUVs, as proven by the Toyota RAV4 being the “car of the year 2019” in Japan.

This is the Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition, a special edition exclusive to Japan that will be offered across all body styles – coupé and convertible – and with all the engines available on the model.

Not only that, but this special edition has also served as an excuse to showcase the model’s facelift in that market. The Heritage Edition special edition features a specific colour combination: the body colour is metallic green, paying homage to the shade offered on the 1967 version. In addition, this is combined with two white stripes running longitudinally along the bodywork and, if you choose the SS, the wheels are blacked out.

However, we can see few relevant changes on the Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition compared with the conventional versions, so it seems that the only difference will be in the colours.

However, it will indeed be a very limited edition, since the company will only build 90 units for the Japanese market. Nevertheless, the versions and the number of each that will be made of this special edition are already predetermined.

Therefore, 40 units will be Chevrolet Camaro SS in coupé bodywork, which will be distinguished at first glance by their blacked-out wheels. However, that will not be the only difference, since we must not forget that this version has the same 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 that will be fitted to the new Chevrolet Corvette C8 and which produces 453 CV in the Japanese market.

Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition (2)Of the remaining 50 units, 30 will be coupés and 20 convertibles of the conventional Chevrolet Camaro. In this case, the marvellous V8 is replaced by a 4-cylinder inline engine producing 275 CV and 400 Nm of torque.

What the Chevrolet Camaro SS and the Camaro do share is the automatic gearbox. However, they do not fit exactly the same one, since the more powerful variant has 10 speeds while the more down-to-earth one has 8 ratios.

Therefore, Japanese customers will now be able to enjoy the 90 Chevrolet Camaro Heritage Edition exclusively. However, all of them will come with the steering wheel on the left – the opposite of the rest of the cars on the Japanese market – so paying a toll or leaving a car park in central Tokyo will not be the most comfortable thing in the world.
