The 25th anniversary of the “R” big cats is being celebrated twice at the New York Motor Show taking place these days. My colleague Fernando has already shown you the biggest one, the XKR-S GT, and now it is the turn of the XJR. The Jaguar flagship saloon has not had this high-performance variant since 2009, and it has returned in a big way.

We took a first look at its styling and mechanicals last week. We had seen the front and side, and now we can see that the rear has gained a small spoiler on the boot lid, the rear bumper has been redesigned and features twin exhaust outlets on each side. The 20-inch “Farallon” alloy wheels are fitted with tyres developed by Pirelli for the XJR and house ventilated brake discs. The bodywork can be painted in ten exterior colours, and the black grille from the Sport pack comes as standard.

The cabin shows contrasts in the optional semi-aniline leather upholstery, featuring stitching and trim in red or black, and “R” badges on the seats. It also features new materials such as carbon fibre inserts or gloss Piano Black trim. As we already noted, the XJR uses the same engine as the XFR-S and XKR-S, the supercharged 5.0 V8 producing 550 CV and a peak torque of 680 Nm.

It also shares the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox with the XFR-S. It can adapt the gear changes to the driving pace, depending on whether you drive more briskly or more calmly. The chassis, steering and suspension, together with the stability and traction controls, have been modified so that the XJR offers the greatest possible precision and performance.

The Adaptive Dynamics system, the active differential and the stability control feature new functions that make the most of the saloon’s sporting potential. These elements allow the XJR to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and reach 280 km/h, an electronically limited top speed. Its average consumption is 11.6 l/100 km, a respectable figure considering the vehicle’s size and exaggerated power.
