BMW i3: the range extender will hardly be necessary

The representatives of BMW have commented that the range extender will not be necessary on the i3, since with a full battery charge there will be more than enough to cover 200 kilometres between charges.

We were saying the other day that the BMW i3 would reach the market in two different versions: a 100% electric one and another with a range extender based on a two-cylinder motorcycle engine. This extender would kick in when the battery charge was nearly depleted, giving us a breather of more than 100 kilometres.

However, the representatives of the German brand have commented that this range extender will hardly be used by customers. The reason? They say that with an average of around 160 kilometres – and 220 in Eco mode – owners of the vehicle will not need the range extender, since the distance covered day to day is much shorter.

In this way, they make it clear that BMW will focus mainly on developing the version without the extender, which could even have more range by not having to make room for a combustion engine.

But of course, the Bavarian manufacturer knows that there is still great scepticism when it comes to buying an electric car because of the fear of getting stranded. A range extender would remove the fears of potential buyers while, gradually, the electric mindset takes hold in the consciousness of all these customers.
