McLaren was reluctant to launch an SUV, but it is now ready to do so

The brand resisted for more than a decade launching an SUV model, although it now seems to have finally decided to launch its first crossover.

When all manufacturers began to launch SUV models, several premium and luxury car brands resisted presenting models of this type. But the resistance did not last very long and little by little, even Ferrari has launched a model with SUV bodywork and characteristics. What was missing was McLaren, which from the beginning had refused to break its image as a maker of supercars, and has now given in and will soon present its SUV model.

This model, which still has no name, will be the natural rival of the Ferrari Purosangue and the Aston Martin DBX, so we hope it will be a spectacular model that keeps the essence of the brand but with crossover capabilities. The first step towards the launch of the model is an investment of 500 million pounds sterling, earmarked for modifying the brand’s production plant in the United Kingdom.

But in addition, there are plans to build a new plant, which will handle a new generation of models McLaren, including the new SUV being prepared. This is what has been officially said about the whole process of starting this project. But in parallel interviews, something more has been said.

Michael Straughan, McLaren‘s chief operating officer, told Autocar that development of a four-door saloon with a higher ride height and a carbon fibre monocoque chassis, the same as the one it uses for its supercars, was already underway. The launch date planned for this project is 2030, and it could arrive alongside other models with front-engine and all-wheel-drive layouts.

A boost for the brand

During 2025, McLaren produced only 2,000 units of all its models, while the Ferrari Purosangue alone accounted for 3,000 units. Another premium SUV, the Lamborghini Urus, doubles that figure, so we can see there is a market for these models. Furthermore, it is not the only change coming to McLaren.

Another important change concerns engine manufacturing. Until now, they outsourced this element to other manufacturers, but from now on they will be produced in-house. In fact, two hybrid engines and new transmissions are being developed. With this, McLaren is entering a new stage that will put it on a par with the rest of the premium vehicle manufacturers.
