New Kia Sportage 2026: a balanced and technological proposal to keep dominating among compact SUVs

Kia Sportage 2

It has sold more than 7 million units, which makes the Kia Sportage the best-selling model of the Korean brand. And now, the vehicle that leads the compact SUV market is renewed in its fifth generation to remain a benchmark and one of buyers’ favourites in 2026 as well, with design changes and some improvements in equipment and connectivity compared with the version that reached the market in 2022.

Let’s review everything that changes in this new Kia Sportage MY26. We could start with the design, but I’ll dwell on it very little here… because there isn’t much to say. Kia has managed, with few significant changes, to make the front look very different by modifying the bumper, lights and grille. At the rear the changes are more subtle, also with new shapes for the bumper and darker-tinted rear light clusters. The modifications to the bumpers are responsible for the Sportage having grown in length, but only very slightly, by barely 2.5 centimetres.

And as is usual in these cases, when a model receives a cosmetic update or “restyling” and more content, Kia has taken the opportunity to include new alloy wheel designs and two new body colours, one red and one grey.

More technology and assistance systems for safer and more efficient driving

Placed side by side, the new Sportage is clearly identifiable from the outside thanks to the new look the front changes give it; once you sit behind the wheel, however, it’s harder to tell whether you’re in the new model or the old one. What is truly new, and visible, are the steering wheel and the air-conditioning vents. A new upholstery is also included, and the GT Line versions can combine white and black colours, with a result that is perhaps too striking, but elegant.

The important thing about the new Sportage MY26, what truly delivers a step forward in the user experience beyond the design changes, comes from the improvements in technological equipment. There was no need to enlarge the screens, since the Sportage was already well equipped, and it keeps two 12.3-inch screens (smaller on entry versions), one for the instrumentation and another right below it for the multimedia system. But the new operating system brings more fluidity, a more modern presentation and, above all, becomes compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without the need for a cable. In addition, it now also supports remote wireless updates that even allow adding applications, games or choosing new designs for the main screen.

Another addition to the range is the instrument cluster projected onto the windscreen as a 10-inch HUD. It doesn’t reach the level of detail of the augmented-reality systems we already see on some cars, but it displays information from the driver-assistance systems and even directions to follow the route set in the navigation system more easily. In terms of connectivity, it has a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices, and functions such as the In-car Payment system for paying for parking from the car, or a route planner that takes traffic into account and learns the driver’s preferences from previous journeys. It can also feature KIA’s Digital Key 2.0, which eliminates the need for a physical key and allows access to and starting of the vehicle to be managed from a smartphone.

A very complete range of engines: petrol, diesel and hybrids to choose from

Under the bonnet of the Sportage MY26 there are no major novelties, which is by no means bad news, since the KIA SUV’s mechanical offering is among the most complete and up to date in its class. These are the different options by fuel and technology:

  • Petrol engines with C label: two variants of the 1.6 turbo four-cylinder, with 150 CV and the option of manual or automatic gearbox, and with 180 CV, which, as in the previous range, is paired only with the automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. The entry engine works wonderfully and moves the Sportage well, but I recommend not passing up the automatic gearbox. As it is offered in the basic Drive trim, you can have it from 28,760 euros with all discounts, a very good price compared with the competition. As for the more powerful engine… personally I would go for the HEV I’ll tell you about later first.
  • MHEV turbodiesel engine with ECO label: the 1.6 four-cylinder is retained with 48-volt mild hybridisation, delivering 136 CV, also with the option of an automatic gearbox. I really like the balance it offers between performance and consumption, especially if you do a lot of motorway driving. But its positioning in the range is complicated: it costs almost 5,000 euros more in list price than the petrol version (the difference is even greater with discounts), although it does carry the ECO label. But the HEV also carries the ECO label, and it is much more powerful and smoother… and it costs even less.
  • HEV engine with ECO label: consumption almost like a diesel on relaxed journeys, very pleasant and efficient in town… and once again, cheaper than the diesel, which it outperforms by 100 CV. Today, it is the model Kia seems to want you to look at… and the one I recommend. Here you can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive, but I would skip the 4×4 and stick with the 4×2, a good set of All Season tyres and get on with covering the miles.

Further on, a fourth variant is planned to be added, also present in the previous range: the Sportage PHEV with CERO label. Otherwise, the Sportage’s qualities remain unchanged, whether we speak of its good interior space, the boot capacity, which is among the best in its class, or the sensations it delivers when driven, since there are no changes to the chassis. The Sportage keeps that balance which, together with a favourable relationship between price and equipment, has taken it to the top of the sales rankings. Why change it?
