New Porsche 911: the eighth dimension

Every new Porsche 911 that is launched on the market takes us to a new dimension of sportiness and performance. The eighth generation, unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show, was not going to be any different.

Porsche presents the eighth generation of the Porsche 911 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. And although the feeling is that the current model could have stayed on the market for a while longer, the truth is that the new Porsche 911 surpasses its predecessor in every way.

On the design we will say very little. The best thing is for you to look at the images and the video. What is clear is that at Porsche they have shown they know how to preserve the essence of the original 911, and the new model remains a genuine “nine-eleven” no matter how you look at it.

We could even say it has gained some muscle, something that seemed difficult.

To achieve this, the front has been widened by 45 mm. Notable features include the recess in the bonnet between the headlights, the door handles flush with the bodywork, and the wider wheel arches, which allow fitting wheels of up to 20″ at the front and 21″ on the rear axle.

The greatest evolution is probably at the rear, where the spoiler is very well camouflaged, and with light clusters joined by a light strip, in the style of what we have seen on the brand’s latest models, such as the new Cayenne, Macan and Panamera.

More power for the Porsche 911 boxer engine

Under the rear bonnet is one of the main novelties of this 911, in which the turbocharged six-cylinder boxer engines gain power. The Porsche 911 Carrera S reaches 450 CV (30 CV more than the previous generation), which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. It cuts no less than 0.4 seconds off the previous 911 Carrera S’s time.

With the optional Sport Chrono package, the 911 accelerates a further 0.2 seconds faster. Top speed is 308 km/h, and average fuel consumption stands at 8.9 l/100 km. The figures for the 911 Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive are 3.6 seconds for the sprint, 306 km/h top speed and 9 l/100 km average consumption.

To improve efficiency and performance, Porsche uses a new turbocharger design, as well as an improved injection process. The eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox has also been evolved for even faster operation.

New interior and more assistance systems

The interior design is perhaps where the greatest evolution can be seen, even more than in the bodywork. Porsche says it has drawn inspiration from the 1970s 911s, with their straight and well-defined lines. But the truth is that the dashboard could not look more modern and digital.

The large instrument cluster dominates, naturally with the rev counter in the central position. The ignition key sits on the left (otherwise it would not be a 911), and the 10.9-inch touchscreen takes the spotlight away from the classic buttons, which are reduced to a minimum.

Among the new assistance systems, the Porsche Wet (standard) stands out, a programme designed to configure the car’s settings po make driving on wet asphalt as easy as possible.

For the first time, the 911 also gets a night vision assistant that works with images from a thermal camera. And all connectivity systems now benefit from artificial intelligence to anticipate the driver’s needs.

The new Porsche 911 also features three digital services that are arriving on the German sports car for the first time. Porsche Road Trip is a kind of assistant to help plan excursions.

Porsche 360+ is a personal assistant that can even be used outside the vehicle. And Porsche Impact, an emissions calculator developed to help neutralise the individual carbon footprint left by the vehicle, through certified climate projects in which the customer can invest to offset their carbon footprint.

Customers can already place orders for the new Porsche 911, which has a price in Spain of €138,105 for the 911 Carrera S, and €147,065 for the 911 Carrera 4S.
