Opel is developing a new electric SUV with the technology of Leapmotor
With this collaboration with Leapmotor, Opel seeks to reinforce its role as a driver of electrification and value creation within the Stellantis group, combining Chinese agility with European quality.
Opel has just officially confirmed the joint development of a new electric SUV with the Chinese brand Leapmotor. This new model will join the electric vehicle range of the German brand, part of the Stellantis group, and will be produced at the Spanish Figueruelas plant, near Zaragoza, starting in 2028 alongside the Opel Corsa.
In the second half of 2026, at this same plant, production will begin on the Leapmotor B10, a compact SUV we have discussed many times here at HighMotor, which will serve as the basis and forerunner of Opel’s future model. At around 4.5 metres long, this new Opel model will belong to segment C and can be considered a compact SUV.

It is worth noting that the German company regards this new vehicle as a “reference model” for advancing towards efficient global collaboration between Stellantis and Leapmotor. The aim is to combine Chinese technology with European experience to launch affordable electric vehicles in the shortest possible time. It is expected to be the first of several Opel models to incorporate components from Leapmotor.
Leapmotor technology with Opel essence
Among the key elements the Opel SUV will adopt are Leapmotor’s latest electric architecture and its LFP batteries. They will be available in 56.2 and 67.1 kWh capacities, with a supported charging power of up to 168 kW. Let us recall that the Leapmotor B10 offers up to 434 km of WLTP range and has a 160 kW motor, although it lacks battery temperature preconditioning, which can affect its performance in cold climates.
Opel will develop this new electric SUV using Leapmotor’s technology but adapting it to the tastes of European customers. The design will be developed at the Rüsselsheim headquarters in Germany, with international teams from Germany and China. The new model will incorporate the distinctive visual identity of Opel, as well as its own chassis, lighting, seat and user experience engineering. It is not yet clear, however, whether it will keep the large central screen and minimalist interior of the B10 or adopt a more traditional style such as the one we have already seen in other Opel models.

Finally, it should be pointed out that although so far only the development of this new model under the Opel brand has been confirmed, some rumours suggest a possible later launch of similar variants under some other Stellantis brands, such as Peugeot or FIAT. It is important to clarify, however, that as of today this is nothing more than a rumour.
