Porsche could be developing a far more radical 718 Cayman GT4 RS

Porsche is pressing ahead with the development of sports cars, and everything points to the next addition to its model range being the 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

Contemporary sports cars seem to have no limits, as they are capable of constantly surprising us. Porsche has always been a benchmark in the development of this type of car, something that is possible thanks to a configuration that is today in danger of extinction and to exquisite fine-tuning. The 718 Cayman GT4 is a clear example of this, a vehicle in which a manual gearbox and a naturally aspirated flat-six engine are presented as indispensable ingredients in an almost perfect recipe. But the engineers at the German brand have considered that there is still much potential to exploit in this model, which is why they have begun development of the GT4 RS.

Porsche usually keeps an ace up its sleeve for its most special offspring, and this has been applied on several occasions to the 911. However, the 718 Cayman has earned a very special place both at Porsche and in our hearts on its own merits, and this is something the company’s engineers have valued.

The second generation of the GT4 has remained faithful not only to its own essence but also to the original concept of a sports car. But if it is possible to go further, why not do so? This very idea has crossed the minds of the executives at Porsche, who have allowed a very revealing test mule to run at full speed around the Nürburgring circuit.

Several people have already spotted this prototype which, besides showing a styling very similar to that of a 718 Cayman, features some very distinctive details. A large rear wing leads us to believe that this mule conceals the GT4 RS, as do a more prominent front bumper and much more pronounced wheel arches.

The mechanical specification is a mystery to us for now, but it would not be surprising if Porsche dared to fit this more radical GT4 with the engine from the 911 GT3. At the same time, a six-speed manual gearbox and a seven-speed PDK would be responsible for managing the possible 500 CV and 460 Nm that the 718 Cayman GT4 would produce.

The dates of its presentation have not yet been revealed, but everything points to it possibly being unveiled at the next Geneva Motor Show. In this way, Porsche will continue to offer its customers the chance to get a pure, hardcore sports car that is also capable of coexisting peacefully and harmoniously with electric vehicles, a pairing that need not disappear in the not-too-distant future.
