SsangYong Korando 2016: new 178 CV diesel engine

SsangYong has just unveiled the MY2016 update of the Korando, which introduces a new 178 CV diesel engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox. Subtle design changes are also present on the Korando 2016, as well as more equipment and connectivity.

The South Korean manufacturer is applying a final update to its successful Korando to boost its presence in the SUV market ahead of its generational renewal. The new design language of SsangYong, first seen on the SsangYong Tivoli, will be gradually introduced across the rest of the product range, so the Korando is expected to adopt this new design philosophy in a future next generation.

For now, the SsangYong Korando 2016 features a new e-XDi220 diesel engine as its most important novelty. The turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder inline block has been adapted to meet the requirements of the Euro 6 emissions standard, while offering more power and fuel economy than its predecessor. Available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the unit produces 178 CV and a maximum torque of 400 Nm available between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm.

Maximum power and torque are up to 19.4% and 11% higher respectively than the previous 2.0-litre Euro 5 diesel engine. CO2 emissions have been reduced to 139 g/km from the original 147 g/km, while official combined-cycle fuel consumption has dropped from 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres to 5.3 litres per 100 kilometres. In addition, the six-speed manual gearbox is joined by a new six-speed Aisin automatic gearbox.

In addition to the new diesel engine, the SsangYong Korando MY2016 adds subtle design improvements such as clear-lens indicators, a black radiator grille with chrome details, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of equipment, the new Korando debuts an updated infotainment system, with USB connectivity, an auxiliary output and an HDMI port. Bluetooth and iPod and iPhone connectivity are also available, along with a seven-inch touchscreen with audio streaming for smartphones and a rear-view camera, and a TomTom navigation system as the top-of-the-range option.
