Tesla adds the long-wheelbase Model Y L to its lineup for the Japanese market
Given that this long-wheelbase variant of the Model Y is produced only at the Shanghai Gigafactory, nothing suggests it will reach the European market in the short term.
Tesla has just begun sales of the Model Y L in Japan, expanding the availability of the long-wheelbase variant of the electric SUV from the brand to a total of eleven markets in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the company has revealed that it plans a significant expansion of its service network to meet the growing sales volume recorded in the Japanese market.
As in other markets, in Japan the Model Y L is sold only in its Premium version with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive AWD. Its base price in Japan starts at 7.59 million yen -about 41,200 euros at current exchange rates. However, thanks to the Japanese Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) subsidy of 1.27 million yen, the final base price drops to 6.32 million yen -about 34,300 euros at current exchange rates.

Residents of Tokyo can also access an additional subsidy of between 400,000 and 800,000 yen, which could reduce the final cost of the vehicle to between 5.52 and 5.92 million yen -between 30,000 and 32,100 euros at current exchange rates.
According to the company, deliveries in the Japanese market will begin at the end of April. It is worth noting that, as a launch campaign, customers who receive their vehicle before the end of June will enjoy three years of free charging on the Japanese Supercharger network. Currently, Tesla has 726 charging stations distributed across 146 locations throughout Japan.
First in China, now in Japan
The Model Y L is a long-wheelbase version of the standard Model Y, with seating for six passengers in a 2+2+2 three-row configuration. It offers front seats with electric adjustment, heating and ventilation, while the second row includes retractable armrests, heating and electric folding. The third row, meanwhile, features air vents on the C-pillars, USB-C ports and cup holders. In addition, the rear seats can be folded down from the boot, allowing it to reach a cargo volume of up to 2,539 litres with all seats folded, 401 litres more than the five-seat model. The front boot, on the other hand, keeps its capacity of 116 litres.

Among its exclusive features are adaptive suspension with electronic dampers for greater comfort, the optional Cosmic Silver colour, 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels and a premium sound system with 18 speakers and a subwoofer. In terms of performance, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds and its top speed is limited to 201 km/h. As for range, Tesla claims it is capable of covering 788 kilometres on a single charge under the WLTC homologation cycle, which is the one used in Japan.
The Model Y L was initially presented in China last August and, since last month, has been extended to nearly all Asia-Pacific markets, with the exception of India and Taiwan. It is now available in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. All units sold in these markets come from the Tesla Gigafactory in Shanghai.
