The Audi R8 is preparing its return in 2027 and will be a plug-in hybrid
The Audi R8 could return in 2027 as a plug-in hybrid model, with a powerful combustion engine and three electric motors that will reach 1,000 CV.

The production of the Audi R8, the supercar from the German brand that was on the market for several years, was halted a few months ago. This production interruption left the brand without any model covering that segment of the range. But everything points to Audi having resumed the project and that it is preparing a new Audi R8, although this new generation will have several differences from the previous ones.
The first Audi R8 was launched in 2008, and it wasn’t until 2015 that the second generation arrived. The arrival of 2024 meant that we were left without this model, and the brand had to consider what to do with the name. But in 2025, everything seems to indicate that the Audi R8 is going to arrive soon, and it will do so in the form of a plug-in hybrid model.

Apparently, the brand is already working on developing this plug-in hybrid powertrain and if we haven’t been misled, it will have a lot to do with the Lamborghini Temerario. Apparently, it will share technology with this model, so it will have considerable power and cutting-edge technology.
Not much is yet known about the return of the Audi R8, but 2027 is being mentioned as the probable arrival date of the car. If this date is correct, during 2026 we should see a preview in the form of a concept model. What we already know is that the engine will be a 4.0-litre block accompanied by three electric motors.
This configuration will allow the car to achieve a total power output of up to 1,000 CV in the most powerful versions. This goes against the known intentions of Audi to phase out combustion engines before 2033 in favour of hybrid configurations. These versions are more sustainable but offer the advantages of combustion engines applied to the models that will be presented in the coming years.
In terms of design, changes will be seen, since this new iteration of the R8 is expected to be based on the PB18 E-Tron prototype. The volume of the car may increase, as it has to accommodate the plug-in hybrid powertrain. This will also bring other changes to the bodywork, which must improve considerably in terms of aerodynamics.
