The F10 generation of the BMW 5 Series is already the best-selling in history

BMW Serie 5 2014 (53)

The German brand must feel quite proud of the current generation of the BMW 5 Series, which is internally known as F10. With more than two million units sold since its market launch in 2010, it has already become the best-selling generation among the six different 5 Series families that BMW has developed.

BMW says that over these last six years its mid-size saloon has been the most successful in its category, understood as the E Premium segment. If one thing is clear, it is that the brand did its homework, and these more than two million units sold and a 42% increase over its predecessor guarantee it. In the last year alone, almost 350,000 units of the BMW 5 Series were registered, counting the three different bodystyles: Saloon, Touring and Gran Turismo.

The wide range of versions the customer can choose from when buying a 5 Series is an advantage for the brand, but above all for the user. Diesel and petrol engines with four-, six- and eight-cylinder blocks and power outputs from 150 to 560 horsepower, automatic and manual gearboxes, rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, a large technological deployment and many gadgets to choose from the options list.

The first BMW 5 Series debuted in 1972 and since then, more than 7.5 million units have been sold across the six generations. In this way, the sales share of this generation accounts for more than 25% of all 5 Series sales in history.

The 5 Series F10 will not take long to die. Despite the good figures from last year, for a car, six years means that if your main rivals have already made the generational leap, you may be left behind. The truth is that Mercedes has just presented the new E-Class, and the Audi A6 still remains very young.

I wouldn’t like to be in the shoes of BMW’s designers and engineers, since in the next generation they will have to make sure the 5 Series keeps the same “appeal” as the current one. Will they manage it?
