The most radical SUV makes its presence felt: welcome the new Mercedes G63 AMG

Mercedes has just unveiled the new G63 AMG. It features a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine capable of delivering 585 CV of power and 850 Nm of torque.

Performance knows no segments and targets every vehicle whatever the conditions. It has barely been a month since we met the new G-Class from Mercedes, and the brand has just announced the most radical version of this off-roader. The G63 AMG makes its presence felt as the most sporty, bold and wild SUV ever created by the German marque, thanks to a tuning and a styling that fit perfectly with the philosophy of this very special 4×4.

The new AMG version of the G-Class is capable of offering a perfect balance between comfort, off-road capabilities and, at the same time, a high level of sportiness. It achieves this thanks to supercar-like performance combined with a series of features essential in an off-roader of the stature of the Mercedes G.

Supercar heart

The new G-Class retains the essence of all previous generations, which keeps its undeniable charisma intact. However, from a mechanical and technological standpoint, the German 4×4 changes in every respect, as demonstrated by its new powertrain. On this occasion, the star brand has opted to use the already well-known 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which powers several models bearing the AMG badge.

The engineers at the German company have reduced the displacement of this new engine -from 5.5 litres in the previous generation- which allows for more restrained fuel consumption and even greater power, which on this occasion rises to 585 CV and 850 Nm of torque. These figures allow the G63 AMG to reach 100 km/h in an impressive 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h, figures that rise to 240 km/h if the AMG Driver’s Package is fitted.

At the same time, this new generation includes the cylinder deactivation system, designed to reduce consumption and avoid frequent visits to the petrol station. This innovation applies when driving in Comfort mode and deactivates cylinders two, three, five and eight during partial load.

To complement the mechanicals, the new AMG-badged G-Class features a nine-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is characterised by almost instantaneous shifts. At the same time, gear changes will be more precise depending on the driving mode we select, which can be Comfort, Sport or Sport Plus.

Off-road spirit

It is true that the AMG initials give vehicles from Mercedes a much more radical and sporty character, but room has always been made for other elements. In this case, a series of specific components have been reserved to keep the off-road capabilities intact of the G-Class despite being fitted with an engine with a clearly sporty spirit.

One of these elements is undoubtedly the all-wheel-drive system called 4Matic. This establishes almost unshakeable ground grip, since the G-Class distributes torque 40% to the front axle and 60% to the rear. At the same time, a transfer case has been included, which stands as the ideal companion for tackling terrain that is unfavourable for almost any vehicle.

Another area the German brand has worked on thoroughly is adaptive damping and the running gear. This new G63 AMG features new running gear with coil springs on all four wheels and, at the same time, independent front suspension with a double wishbone axle. On the other hand, at the rear axle we find a solid axle with five-link suspension.

Without a doubt, the new Mercedes G63 AMG presents itself as the ideal companion for travelling comfortably on the road, enjoying its sporty performance and tackling any unexpected situation that may arise along the way. For the moment we do not know the prices of this new creation from the German brand, but we can assume the figure will be around 170,000 euros, considering that its basic version starts from EUR 127,450.
