The new Toyota Hilux is ready to be unveiled and shows interesting new features for the European market, although it will also be sold in Asia and Australia.

The Toyota Hilux has become the best-selling pick-up in the world, although in the United States it has to compete with the Ford F-150. Elsewhere in the rest of the markets, it sets a standard and now does so with an update, which arrives to keep dominating its range. And it does so, moreover, with an electric version. The new Toyota Hilux has already arrived in the market, and it does so with quite a few new features.

The design style that defines the new generation of the Hilux is called Cyber Sumo and is different from that of other models of the brand that we have seen in recent months. At the front, it shows more stylised LED headlights, which together with a honeycomb-design grille and body-coloured finish mark the presence of this renewed pick-up.

The air intakes show a solid look, enhanced by a protective plate that gives it a more resistant appearance. In the electric version, the grille is closed and integrated with the bumper, in addition to featuring redesigned air intakes.

The profile keeps the look of the previous version, so it remains recognisable. However, the front and rear wheel arches have been redesigned and cover square wheel arches. The wheel design also presents a new look, which makes it appear different.

At the rear, work has been done to give it a more dynamic look, with sharper LED lights and a more striking bumper, with side steps. Looking at the size of the vehicle, the length of 5,320 mm and the wheelbase of 3,085 mm are maintained. It will be offered with a double cab in Europe and Australia, although in the Thai market it will be available with a single cab and an extended cab.

The renewed interior

In the interior we also find several changes. The functionality of the Hilux is maintained, although it has been equipped with several technological elements that improve its handling. The dashboard, with straight lines, features a 12.3-inch information and entertainment screen. The digital instrument cluster screen is seven inches on the lower versions and 12.3 inches on the higher ones, which allows for adequate and very visible information.

The physical controls for the audio system and climate control are retained. The steering wheel comes from the Land Cruiser, while the compact gear lever and the drive mode selector are located on the centre console. Several storage compartments and cup holders have been placed to improve driver comfort.

As for technology, it has been equipped with an interesting catalogue of ADAS to increase safety at the wheel.

Engines

In this regard, we will be able to find several options, which will be offered depending on the market they are intended for. The first of these is the 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, which is offered in pure form or with 48-volt mild hybridisation. In petrol form, a 2.7-litre unit is offered.

The electric version is equipped with two electric motors that deliver a combined power output of 144 kW, equivalent to 196 CV. The battery powering these two motors has a capacity of 59.2 kWh. This will allow a range of up to 240 kilometres under the WLTP cycle. Toyota plans to launch a version with a hydrogen fuel cell later on, so this range will be increased shortly.
