The next five-door Honda Civic will be exported to more regions

Perhaps it is not as exciting as the launch of the new S660, but this news is also significant for the history of Honda. The Japanese brand has announced today that it will invest 200 million pounds, roughly 275 million euros, so that production of the Civic at its British plant in Swindon (HUM, an acronym that in English stands for Honda of the UK Manufacturing) acquires a global character.
This financial backing will allow the next generation of the compact’s five-door bodywork to be exported to new regions. In addition, the measure will guarantee the medium-term future of the facilities. The factory dedicated to building the Civic has a capacity of 250,000 cars per year, but in 2014 only 120,000 were assembled.
In the press release, Honda neither confirms nor denies the information announced by the business daily Nikkei two weeks ago. According to that article, the manufacturer is considering reintroducing the hatchback Civic in the North American market, from which it withdrew it in 2005 due to the poor sales it generated there. Nor is there any mention of whether this decision affects the new Civic Type R.
The Honda hatchback Civic was available in America for 32 years, from the first to the sixth generation. The last representative was the Civic Si EP3 -SiR in Canada-, a variant aesthetically very similar to the Sport we knew in Europe but equipped with the 163 CV engine and 179 Nm of torque that also powered the Acura RSX.

Honda adds in the announcement that, due to the increase in Civic production, it will move the assembly of the European units of the CR-V, currently produced at HUM, to its Canadian factory in Alliston, Ontario (HCM, an acronym that in English stands for Honda of Canada Manufacturing). It will be the first time this factory, where 390,000 CR-V are assembled per year, exports cars to the European continent.
