Since the 1990s, the Audi A8 has been the flagship and representative model of the German brand from Ingolstadt. The current generation does not have much life left and, as is customary, the first rumours about the next generation are beginning to surface.

It seems that Audi may be feeling some envy of the performance and public acceptance enjoyed by its compatriot from the brand with the star. Yes, I am referring to the Mercedes S-Class.

The new S-Class is available in several body styles: saloon, long-wheelbase saloon, coupé, cabriolet, and the ultra-luxurious Maybach S-Class and Maybach Pullman. Meanwhile, the current Audi A8 makes do with just two, the standard-wheelbase saloon and the long-wheelbase saloon. A few days ago a six-door Audi A8 was shown, but Audi made it clear that it was a one-off built to order for a customer.

According to statements by the Technical Director of Audi, Stefan Knirsch, this could change, as he commented that a version larger than the long-wheelbase Audi A8 L could prove viable given the success of the Mercedes Maybach S-Class, and stated that they are internally considering it.

Furthermore, Knirsch made it clear that the next generation of the German flagship would arrive very heavily loaded technologically speaking. It will comply with the SAE Level 3 automation standard, which allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods while the vehicle controls steering by itself in a very safe manner even at high speeds.

Although current regulations only permit hands-off automatic steering at speeds below 10 km/h (basically parking manoeuvres), Knirsch says that “we are confident it will not be a problem by the time the A8 goes on sale”, since this regulation is expected to change within a few months.

Although no dates are yet known for the next generation of the Audi A8, it is likely not to be unveiled until the end of next year.
