With this decision, Stellantis strengthens the industrial future of Opel in Germany while maintaining its commitment to more diversified mobility that offers each customer what they are looking for.

Stellantis has just confirmed that the next generation of the Opel Astra will be produced at Opel’s main plant in Rüsselsheim, Germany. This iconic model will be joined by at least three other new vehicles, among them an electric SUV based on the technology of Leapmotor, with launches planned before 2030.

The most notable point is that the new Astra will not only leave the Rüsselsheim plant, but will also be designed and developed at the modern grEEn-campus, Opel’s new global headquarters. This new model will be based on the innovative STLA One platform, which unifies five previous architectures into a single modular system. This platform is one of the pillars of Stellantis’ strategic plan for the future.

Although Opel has not yet detailed the powertrains of the future Astra, the brand maintains its philosophy of offering multiple options. The current model is already available in electric versions -in this case on the EMP2 platform-, plug-in hybrid, hybrid and diesel. The STLA One platform is designed precisely to support all types of powertrains in the B, C and D segments. According to Stellantis, this architecture will underpin 30 models from different brands in the group until 2035, with an expected annual production of two million units.

“The allocation of the next generation of the Astra to the Rüsselsheim plant demonstrates Opel’s commitment to Germany as an industrial location. Rüsselsheim will remain the home of the Astra and will be produced close to the new grEEn-campus.”

Opel reinforces its commitment to Germany

This decision will guarantee around 1,350 production jobs and will allow the retention of apprentices and dual-study students who complete their programmes by winter 2028/2029. The exact start date of production has not yet been announced.

Within the FaSTLAne 2030 plan, Stellantis has classified Opel as a regional brand, which will allow it to take advantage of the global synergies and strengths of other group brands such as FIAT, Peugeot, Jeep and Ram. The company is investing more than one billion euros in Germany, mainly in the new Opel headquarters and Stellantis Germany.

In addition to the Astra, Opel will launch at least three new models by 2030. These include the next generation of the Corsa and a still unnamed C-segment electric SUV, which will use the technology of Leapmotor and will be produced at the Spanish Figueruelas plant in Zaragoza.
