The return of the Porsche 911 Rainbow: a hybrid tribute with 550 CV
Galpin Motors has announced plans to produce a limited series of these commemorative hybrids, starting with this 911 Raimbow

Galpin Auto Sports, the German tuning house, has once again left us speechless with the presentation of a special edition Porsche 911 Targa at the Monterey event. This launch commemorates the 50th anniversary of bb-Auto, the iconic German tuning house, with a “restomod” that combines an incredible, nostalgic design with modern technology, a hybrid engine and a completely renewed interior.
The vehicle, named Porsche 911 Rainbow Targa, is a direct tribute to the legendary bb-Auto Rainbow Turbo Targa from 1976, a car born from the collaboration between bb-Auto and Polaroid. Now, almost five decades later, this new version is based on a Porsche 911 Targa from 1986, which has been given a second life through a meticulous restoration and modernization process carried out by Galpin and Porsche Santa Clarita.

Porsche 911 Rainbow
One of the car’s most striking aspects is its exterior decoration, where rainbow stripes unfold across a black body, creating a visual contrast that does not go unnoticed. But the real revolution lies under the hood. This 911 Targa has been fitted with a 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, developed by Ed Pink Racing, which is combined with a hybrid system developed by Vonnen. Together, they deliver an impressive power output of 550 horsepower.
The electric motor, discreetly located between the combustion engine and the transmission, adds up to 148 CV of additional power, providing a driving experience that blends the best of both worlds: the classic roar of the boxer engine with the efficiency and immediate response of the electric system.

As this is a restoration, significant improvements have been made to the chassis to ensure safe and precise handling. The suspension has been completely upgraded, inspired by that of the 997 GT3, and includes coil-over shock absorbers and an active suspension management system, which ensures precise handling adapted to any situation. The brakes have also been replaced with a larger Brembo system, designed to withstand the additional power. All of this is complemented by 18-inch Titan 7 alloy wheels, customized specifically for this model.
All the integrated technology
The car’s interior is no exception when it comes to renovation. The Recaro LX seats, upholstered in an elegant shade of blue, set the tone in a cabin that has been redesigned to offer both comfort and style. The blue details extend to the instrument panel and door panels. It features a 9.2-inch touchscreen for the information and entertainment system, conveniently located on the passenger side, and integrated with the Porsche Classic Communication system. Other modern touches include electric air conditioning and a high-end Focal audio system, with a power output of 660 V, which promises exceptional sound quality.

This exclusive Porsche will make its public debut on 16 August at the Monterey Werks Reunion, where it will share the spotlight with two other iconic models: a 1984 Porsche 911 Slantnose and a 1981 Porsche 928 Targa, both also modified by bb-Auto. Subsequently, the 911 Rainbow Targa will be displayed at the famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, on the Concept Lawn, on 18 August.
Galpin Motors, which holds the exclusive rights to bb-Auto, has announced plans to produce a limited series of these commemorative hybrids, thus celebrating the brand’s half-century of history. Although the price of these models has not yet been revealed, each unit will be customized according to the wishes and specifications of its owner, ensuring that every vehicle is as unique as its history.
