The technology of the new generation of Mini, unveiled

The third generation of the Mini since BMW took over the company is almost ready. It is the most technologically advanced generation to date, and it will reach the market in the first half of 2014.

A couple of months ago we showed you a series of images in which the new Mini was shown in full, without any camouflage hiding its new lines, accentuated across the width and length of its bodywork.

Now it is the turn of the technical side, which the brand has begun to reveal today. Starting with the engines, Mini has announced a complete renewal of its line-up, with an entry-level three-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers a total output of 134 CV and a maximum torque of 220 Nm. At launch, a 2-litre four-cylinder, also turbocharged, producing 189 CV and 280 Nm of torque, is also expected. Of course, a diesel option will also be available, with a new 1.5-litre family offering 114 CV and 270 Nm of torque at launch. All engines will be paired with new manual and automatic gearboxes, as well as a Start&Stop system.

The chassis also undergoes major changes, with even greater rigidity in both its structure and auxiliary systems, as well as the suspension architecture, which will remain multi-link at the rear axle. This Mini sits on the UKL1 platform, designed for front-wheel and all-wheel drive, which BMW will also use in the future. Unsprung masses have been reduced thanks to the use of lightweight materials in the suspension, which, combined with a new, lighter braking system, makes the dynamics of the Mini 3 practically unbeatable.

New features also include adaptive damping, which lets the driver choose between two absorption modes at the touch of a button, one focused on comfort and the other with a clearly sporty character. In addition, the steering system has also changed, now adopting an electronic system that can make small corrections automatically, imperceptibly to the driver.
