Hyundai faces a new challenge: taking its hydrogen fuel cell technology beyond the automotive sector.

Hyundai Nexo Genera Energia

Hyundai has just signed an agreement aimed at generating electricity from hydrogen. The alliance is made up of the carmaker and the local energy companies Korea East-West Power (EWP) and Deokyang. To achieve the goal of generating electricity from hydrogen, Hyundai will provide its fuel cell system, while Deokyang will handle the hydrogen supply.

For its part, EWP will be responsible for managing the installation and the sale of electricity. It is worth noting that the pilot project will consist of the installation of a one-megawatt hydrogen fuel cell power plant.

This first pilot project will be used as local technology in a fuel cell power plant in Korea. In this plant, Hyundai‘s patented fuel cell technology will replace the “foreign technology on which the market depends,” as the carmaker itself has stated.

The installation of Hyundai‘s new hydrogen power generation technology is scheduled for later this year in Ulsan. It will have a capacity of one megawatt and will consist of two 500 kW container-type generating modules. In addition, each generator will be loaded with multiple energy modules from the Hyundai Nexo fuel cell vehicle.

The carmaker has reported that the installation of its new hydrogen power generation system could achieve an annual supply of 8,000 MWh. This figure would provide enough electricity to light up around 2,200 homes at 300 kWh/month.

It is worth noting that another goal of this partnership is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible, since the technology, being powered by hydrogen, would not emit any pollutants into the atmosphere. In addition, the component to be used in the Korean facility will be a hydrogen by-product coming from a nearby petrochemical complex. This gas will reach the new plant through a pipeline network. The three companies have indicated that this move will reduce costs and make use of the local energy sources.

An opportunity that Hyundai does not want to let pass

The deployment of Hyundai’s technology that generates electricity from hydrogen with the Hyundai Nexo system is an opportunity for the carmaker to take its fuel cell technology beyond the automotive sector. In addition, Hyundai has focused on job creation and the development of satellite industries.

It is important to highlight that Hyundai will collaborate with both companies, EWP and Deokyang, to achieve greater reach in the not-too-distant future. While the carmaker is betting on its fuel cell system, EWP, for its part, will ensure a greater share of renewable energy, and Deokyang will be able to lower the price of hydrogen.

Through the agreement signed on April 11, Hyundai hopes to promote the fuel cell industry and its satellite companies. It has stated that it will continue its commitment to building a “Hydrogen Society in line with the FCEV Vision 2030“. Attending the signing of the alliance were Il Jun Park, president of EWP, Chi Yoon, president of Deokyang, and Youngcho Chi, president and director of Innovation.
