This camperised prototype of the Staria people carrier from Hyundai could become a reality

With this proposal, Hyundai aims to combine the futuristic design and generous space of the Staria with electric sustainability and the enjoyment of weekend getaways.

The CMT trade fair – Caravan, Motor und Touristik – held in the German city of Stuttgart was the venue chosen by Hyundai to present the Staria Camper Concept prototype. An interesting proposal that arrives just a few days after the world premiere of the fully electric version of the Staria at the Brussels Motor Show.

With this concept model, the South Korean manufacturer aims to show how the Staria can be transformed into a premium camper specifically tailored to the preferences of the European market. Hyundai thus responds to the growing demand for electric mobility oriented towards leisure travel, which leads users to pay special attention to versatile vehicles that serve both for everyday use and for weekend getaways.

The Staria Camper Concept is based on the electric version of the Staria, whose commercial launch is planned for the first half of 2026. This 5.26-metre-long people carrier features a platform with 800V architecture and an 84 kWh battery pack that allows it to travel around 400 km under the WLTP homologation cycle.

The most notable feature of this prototype is its integrated electrically operated pop-up roof. Designed to maintain the vehicle’s aerodynamics, it reduces wind noise and turbulence while driving, and is operated simply by pressing a button. It is finished in the same colour as the bodywork, blending in almost invisibly when folded.

With everything you need to enjoy true freedom

Hyundai has also fitted solar panels to this same roof, capable of delivering a peak output of 520 watts. According to the South Korean manufacturer, on a typical day with five hours of sunshine, these panels can generate up to 2.6 kWh of energy, enough to power the lighting and ventilation systems, as well as the appliances integrated into this camperised adaptation of the Staria people carrier.

Inside, this prototype offers practical solutions for life on the road, including individual front seats that rotate 180 degrees, rear seats that fold down to quickly become a double bed, a 36-litre fridge, a compact sink, an outdoor shower and an awning. Everything is designed to maximise comfort and functionality on weekend getaways.

Finally, it should be noted that although the production model, should it ever reach the market, would be based on the new fully electric version of the Staria, the prototype displayed in Stuttgart appears to incorporate a combustion engine. On closer inspection, the official images show a large front grille with copper-coloured details, typical of combustion or hybrid versions, whereas the new fully electric version of the Staria has a more closed-off front end, characteristic of electric models.
