Toyota GR Super Sport Concept: the hybrid supercar with over 900 CV
Toyota is considering what its future in the WEC will look like, and for that reason it has developed the GR Super Sport Concept, a hybrid model capable of producing 1000 CV of power

Automotive technologies are present in many aspects of today’s vehicles, but some brands have wanted to take them further. Hybridisation is one of those innovations that revolutionised the automotive world to such an extent that some brands are considering applying it in motorsport. Toyota, an expert in this field, has developed the GR Super Sport Concept, a prototype that previews what circuit vehicles will be in the not-too-distant future.
Thanks to the use of hybrid systems, we can enjoy vehicles with low levels of both consumption and emissions, but over time it is a technology that has come to be in the hands of the most radical and sporty manufacturers. Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren turned to this type of powertrain to bring their most powerful creations to life. However, they are not the only brands capable of doing so, since Toyota has just demonstrated what it is capable of.

The constant participation of the Japanese brand in the WEC has led it to consider what the future of competition will look like. After long work, Toyota has arrived at one of the best answers to that question, which has shaped the GR Super Sport Concept. This supercar incorporates many elements already used in the TS050 HYBRID, the car with which the brand competes in the WEC. However, Toyota has known how to take it to a level above.
Inside the GR Super Sport Concept, we find a V6 combustion engine with twin turbochargers and a hybrid system, Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R), refined through competition. The combination of both motors allows the super concept car to produce 1,000 CV, enough power to deliver outstanding performance.
“Rather than developing production vehicles and turning them into sports cars, we try to determine how to incorporate the knowledge accumulated in competition into production vehicles, and this is how racing contributes to TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s mission of creating ever-better vehicles. So, that is the starting point for the totally new challenge that Toyota has set itself: developing sports cars from active race cars.” said Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Toyota GAZOO Racing.
Without a doubt, the Japanese brand intends to take a completely new approach to the world of competition and, at the same time, expand hybrid and electric propulsion systems. This goal will be achievable for the brand, given the philosophy it follows of creating road cars through technology and knowledge acquired on the track.
