Toyota will unveil its new autonomous driving system at CES 2018
Toyota has just announced that it will unveil its new autonomous driving system at CES 2018. It will feature a detection range of up to 200 metres.

New technologies are bringing within reach elements that we thought belonged to the future. This is the case of autonomous driving, an innovative system that allows the car to move by itself, without the need for the driver’s involvement. This complex system is advancing by leaps and bounds, and it is something we can observe at companies such as Toyota. The Japanese firm has used CES 2018 to make its debut with its autonomous driving platform.
Among its products, both from Lexus and from Toyota, the Japanese firm counts one of the most advanced technologies in the world, and in this field it was not going to be left behind. Moreover, a wide variety of extraordinary ideas and innovations are presented at CES, and Toyota has stood out considerably thanks to the novelties its autonomous driving system offers compared with those of other firms.
Toyota has presented its new autonomous driving system using the Lexus LS600hL as its base, which is very fitting given that the Japanese luxury saloon has a technological level far superior to the rest. The firm has named this new system Platform 3.0 but, to develop it, Toyota did not work alone.

The Toyota engineering department based in the United States has collaborated with CALTY Design Research, a company headquartered in Michigan with a great deal of knowledge on the subject. The main novelties of this complex system can be seen in its stopping capability.
Thanks to Platform 3.0, Toyota vehicles will offer a range of 200 metres and a 360º perimeter view, owing to the installation of four high-resolution LIDAR scanning heads that detect objects in the surroundings with great precision, including dark objects that are particularly hard to see. Furthermore, the Lexus LS600 also includes four LIDAR sensors at each wheel arch, so that it will be able to detect smaller objects.
At the same time, thanks to CALTY, Toyota has brought in an expert in technology design, who has integrated some of the sensors into the roof of the LS, making use of the sunroof space. In this way, they will remain hidden at all times and will not disrupt the harmony of the Japanese saloon. Without a doubt, this innovative system will give Toyota autonomous driving that is much safer and more effective.

Production of Platform 3.0 will take place in Michigan, in a small factory where vehicles will be built at low volume. This will begin in spring 2018 and will be carried out on certain units of the Lexus LS600, with the aim of observing and studying how the new autonomous driving system is received.
