Volkswagen ID.5: the 5 keys to the new electric coupé-style SUV

Little by little, more is becoming known about the Volkswagen ID.5, the coupé version of the ID.4, which will reach the market in early 2022.

The version with coupé-style bodywork derived from the Volkswagen ID.4, the new ID.5, will debut in early September at the Munich Motor Show. Here are some of the keys to the new model, which Volkswagen is still showing camouflaged in its most powerful and sporty version, the ID.5 GTX.

1.- Design of the Volkswagen ID.5: coupé-style SUV

With a length practically identical to that of the ID.4, where the slightly greater length of 3 centimetres is due to the bumper design, the most notable difference in the proportions of the ID.5 compared with the ID.4 is its height, which is 3 centimetres lower, and the different design from the centre pillar rearwards, with a pronounced spoiler.

As with the sister model Audi, the Q4 Sportback e-tron, the coupé-styled SUV allows a slightly lower drag coefficient and offers around 20 km more range, depending on the version. For the ID.5 GTX, for example, 497 km per charge is quoted, compared with 480 for the ID.4 GTX.

2.- Interior of the Volkswagen ID.5

As we have already seen in the Q4, the coupé design of the ID.5 does not mean a loss of practicality or interior space. Here the boot capacity does not increase compared with the ID.4, but it does not decrease either, offering more than 540 litres of luggage volume, a very good figure.

No interior images have been revealed yet; it will share its cabin with the ID.4. Specifically, in the image you can see the dashboard design of an ID.4 in its GTX version. Volkswagen wants to change the way it structures the range, so that it is also available across the rest of the ID family. All versions can be configured by first choosing the car’s appearance, and then selecting a series of packages grouped under the concepts Design, Infotainment, Assistance systems, Comfort and Sport.

3.- Volkswagen ID.5: range and prices

At least at launch, and to differentiate it from the ID.4 not only through its sportier design, the ID.5 will not be offered in the entry-level versions with a 148 or 170 CV motor and a 52 kWh battery.

The entry model in the range will be the ID.5 Pro Performance 150 kW (204 CV), already with a 77 kWh battery. The most dynamic version, the ID.5 GTX, will have the same propulsion system as the ID.4 GTX: two electric motors, one on each axle, for a system output of 299 CV, all-wheel drive and 497 km of range, also with the 77 kWh battery. Volkswagen announces that from the start of sales, the ID.5 will accept DC fast charging at up to 150 kW.

Without definitive prices, and pending confirmation of whether Volkswagen will also differentiate the ID.4 from the ID.5 through standard equipment, a price increase of between 2,000 and 2,500 euros over the ID.4 is to be expected for the coupé SUV, meaning the ID.5 Pro Performance would cost around 48,000 euros, and the ID.5 GTX would be around 53,500 euros.

4.- When will the Volkswagen ID.5 go on sale?

Volkswagen has already been releasing information about its new electric SUV, which we will be able to see without camouflage at its public debut at the Munich Show in the first days of September.

As Volkswagen has been doing with the ID.3 and ID.4, it is normal for it to go on sale initially in a 1st Edition series, and for it to be reservable by the end of this same year. In any case, customer deliveries will not begin until early 2022.

5.- Rivals of the Volkswagen ID.5

There are already some alternatives on the market with electric propulsion and coupé-style SUV bodywork. The first would be the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, with which the ID.5 shares its platform and mechanicals. Specifically, the most powerful version of the Q4 also uses two electric motors and has an output of 299 CV. Its price starts at around 60,000 euros, although you can get a Q4 e-tron Sportback e-tron with 170 CV for less than 47,000 euros. You can read the road test of the Audi Q4 e-tron here.

Another of the ID.5’s main rivals is the Ford Mustang Mach-E. It is available from around 48,500 euros with a 76 kWh battery and 269 CV, although the alternative to the ID.5 GTX would be the 294 CV variant, which has an extended-range battery of 99 kWh. You can read the road test of the Mustang Mach-E here.

In 2022 the arrival of the coupé version of the Skoda Enyaq is also expected, derived from the Skoda Vision iV prototype, which will share its platform with the ID.5 and the Q4 e-tron. The corresponding sporty version, the vRS, with two motors and 300 CV, will not be missing. You can read the road test of the Skoda Enyaq here.
