Volkswagen wants to revive the VR6 family

It was 1991 when Volkswagen launched the 3rd generation of the Golf, packed with new features. One of its biggest draws was a new engine destined to become the flagship of the model.

We are talking about the Golf VR6, today a highly sought-after pre-classic, as it was the first Golf to feature a 6-cylinder engine. Today, Volkswagen has set out to relaunch the VR6 family.

The VR6 has always been a very distinctive engine. Since its debut in 1991, it was used and updated until 2010, with the Passat R36. With an initial displacement of 2.8 litres, one of its most distinctive features was its “narrow V” architecture, as the angle between the two cylinder banks was just 15° or 10.5°, which allowed it to be fitted into compact vehicles without space issues. In this way, it combined the refinement, driving pleasure and sound of a 6-cylinder engine with the compactness and component savings of an inline 4-cylinder.

Now VW has announced it is working on a new generation of the VR6, adapted to today’s needs. It will feature turbocharging, direct injection and lightweight materials construction, among other things.
The first clue about this new development came with the Design Vision GTI concept that the German brand presented at this year’s Wörthersee festival. In that case, figures reached 500 CV and 560 Nm of torque, although in production versions the figures will be toned down to a range of between 350 and 450 CV.
