Volvo will complete its range of electric SUVs with the EX60 in 2025

Following the success that Volvo is achieving in the market with the new EX30, the next ace up the Swedish manufacturer’s sleeve is the successor, with an electric propulsion system, to the current XC60

The Swedish manufacturer’s fourth electric SUV, currently under the control of the Chinese giant Geely, will be launched on the market next year as the successor to the current combustion-engined XC60. The EX60, which is what it will be called following the new nomenclature used by Volvo for its electric models, will arrive to compete in one of the most hotly contested segments, with countless rivals, among which we can mention the Tesla Model Y, the Audi Q6 e-tron, the Porsche Macan, the next-generation BMW iX3, or the successor to the Mercedes-Benz EQC, among others.

Volvo currently has three electric SUVs in its range, each occupying a different segment of the market. The newest and most successful, the EX30, is the Swedish brand’s urban model; the EX40 – until recently known as the XC40 – is a compact SUV for those who need a little more interior space. Meanwhile, the EX90 sits at the very top of the range and is Volvo’s flagship, incorporating the most advanced technology from the Swedish manufacturer.

As we can see, there is currently a gap in Volvo’s range of electric SUVs, which is precisely the one the future EX60 will fill. An SUV of considerable dimensions, but one step below the EX90. This new electric SUV will also be the successor to the XC60, Volvo’s best-selling model globally in 2023, with a total of 228,646 units delivered to customers. It is therefore a model of great importance for the company, as it should generate a good percentage of its annual revenue.

The most logical step for Volvo in its transition to electric mobility

The market launch of the future EX60 is, however, no secret. In 2021 the company already announced its intention to replace the XC60 with a new electric SUV of similar dimensions, when it confirmed its plan to create a joint venture with the Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt. Erik Severinson, the current Head of Product and Strategy at Volvo, has also referred to this model, stating that it will use an evolution of the SPA 2 platform used by the EX90.

On the other hand, we also know that the EX60 will be the first electric SUV from Volvo with a structural battery pack. This will allow it to enjoy greater range and chassis rigidity, improving its on-road behaviour. According to some sources, the EX60’s range will very probably exceed 600 km on a single charge.

Another feature not yet confirmed that could place the EX60 above the EX90, even though the latter is the brand’s flagship, is the fact that it will have an 800V architecture. This would allow this model to drastically reduce charging times, as well as improve energy efficiency by reducing the thickness of the vehicle’s internal wiring and therefore also its weight.
