Volvo XC90 T8, all the technical details
Volvo reveals new details of its flagship, the XC90. This time we tell you about the XC90 T8, the first plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine from the Swedish brand. It delivers a total output of 400 CV, 2.5 l/100 km and five different driving modes.

Volvo continues to show what it is capable of. This time, to mark the launch of the second generation of its flagship XC90, it has developed a new powertrain that will delight the most demanding customers.
Its commercial name will be XC90 T8, and it will crown the top of the range among the mechanical options of the large Swedish SUV.
For the first time in Volvo, a production vehicle will fit a hybrid system that combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, hence the T8 designation, until now reserved for turbocharged petrol combustion engines (T4, T5, T6).

The main elements of the XC90 T8 system are, firstly, a newly developed petrol engine from the Drive-E family, with four cylinders and two litres of displacement. Thanks to supercharging and technologies such as direct injection, it delivers 318 CV and 400 Nm.
Secondly, there is a electric motor which, powered by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery system (270-400 V), is capable of delivering 88 CV. When both powertrains work together, the total system output reaches 400 CV, with a maximum torque of 640 Nm.

Both systems work in perfect harmony thanks to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and an innovative starter-generator mounted on the crankshaft (CISG), which performs several functions, including providing a smooth start or delivering an extra 150 Nm of torque when extreme power is demanded.
The XC90 T8’s performance is brilliant, with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while consuming, according to the combined homologation cycle, just 2.5 litres per 100 km.
This Volvo also features 5 different driving modes: Hybrid, the default mode in which the system determines the perfect combination of power at all times; Pure Electric, with which the XC90 can travel up to 40 km using only electricity; Power Mode, which provides maximum power; AWD, which always provides all-wheel drive; and Save, which allows energy to be “stored” in the battery for later use.
