What will PSA and FCA's firstborn look like after their merger?

PSA and FCA have already begun developing what will be their first joint vehicle, a small crossover that will arrive in 2022 from Alfa Romeo.

2019 is drawing to a close, but not without leaving us with one of the biggest unions of all time: FCA and PSA. It was just a few months ago that the French group published its clear intentions to strengthen ties with the Italians and start working shoulder to shoulder. Only a few days ago, the official press release was issued, confirming that, under this consortium, the two entities would hold a 50% stake each, which means decisions will be made jointly.

We have already witnessed the outcome of PSA’s absorption of Opel, which has given rise to several models from the German brand that share countless elements with their French counterparts. However, the expectation generated by the news of this union is high, and the same question keeps running through our minds: what will the first vehicle from FCA and PSA be like?

Both companies assured that they would use two modular platforms: the MCP and the EMP2. Both platforms have played, and continue to play, a major role in the development of numerous models, especially when it comes to SUVs. Indeed, both companies have confirmed that the first vehicle resulting from their union will be a small crossover that will hit the market in 2022.

Let us recall that at present Alfa Romeo has only the Stelvio as its representative in this much-demanded segment, although it is true that the Tonale will join it before long. However, PSA’s presence will help the Italian group produce vehicles with an urban focus and more affordable than those in its current model range.

So, what can we expect from this first vehicle? First of all, it will surely share countless elements with models such as the recently refreshed Peugeot 2008, the Opel Crossland X or the Citroën C3 Aircross. We will also witness a significant technological leap in infotainment, and a range of engines that, in addition to combustion, will also make use of electricity both as a primary and secondary source of energy.

It is too early to predict the design of this model, which will be launched under the umbrella of Alfa Romeo, but perhaps the upcoming motor shows will reveal a prototype capable of shedding some light. Either way, we are on the verge of witnessing a major shift within FCA, which will bet on the development and renewal of its city vehicles.
