Audi unveils the second generation of the R8 Spyder at the 2016 New York Motor Show. It joins the coupé bodywork to complete the range of this sports car. What is immediately apparent is its width, which is greater than that of its predecessor. The occupant space has also been moved forward to accommodate the mid-mounted engine.

At the front, the Singleframe grille and the wedge-shaped light units stand out, each with 37 light-emitting diodes as standard. Audi offers optional laser lighting recognisable by an anodised blue strip on the headlights, which is additionally illuminated. At the rear, dynamic indicators are standard.

The new model’s roof is a fabric hood that weighs only 44 kilograms. The soft top opens in just 20 seconds using an electro-hydraulic system and can be operated on the move at speeds of up to 50 km/h. When the roof is stowed, a synthetic-fabric wind deflector reduces the rearward airflow. In addition, the rear glass further deflects air when the roof is open. The hood is available in three colours: black, brown and red.

The final weight of the car is 1,612 kilograms, as a result of lightweight construction in the automotive field. The key lies in the new Audi Space Frame (ASF) based on the multi-material construction principle. It combines aluminium and carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer components, structurally integrated.

The engine housed at the rear is the 5.2-litre V10 that delivers 540 CV of power. In addition to direct injection into the combustion chamber (FSI), the V10 also has injection into the intake manifold (MPI). The new Audi R8 Spyder V10 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and to 200 km/h in 11.8 seconds. Its top speed is 318 km/h and its average consumption is 11.7 l/100 km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 277 g/km.

The powerful engine is combined with a seven-speed S tronic gearbox equipped with dual clutch. quattro all-wheel drive is integrated into the drive select dynamic driving system, which allows the driver to choose between the basic modes comfort, auto, dynamic and individual.

Dynamic steering is available, which changes the steering ratio depending on speed and adapts the steering torque. The result is an even more precise steering feel and greater driving comfort. As optional equipment, Audi also offers carbon-fibre-reinforced ceramic brake discs, a material capable of withstanding especially high loads.

The driver can control all the important functions from the new sport or performance leather steering wheel. Standard features include buttons to start and stop the engine and to select the driving modes of the drive select system. The performance leather steering wheel comes with controls for performance mode and another for the exhaust flap control.

The standard Audi virtual cockpit presents detailed information on a 12.3″ monitor with high-resolution 3D graphics. The driver can choose between three displays: the classic view, the infotainment view and the performance view. The MMI Navigation plus system with MMI touch is part of the standard equipment of the Audi R8 Spyder.

A notable feature is the Bang & Olufsen Sound System, standard, with 13 speakers, including the new speaker in the headrest. There are two in each seat, positioned at the ear level of the driver and passenger; it stands out for its excellent sound and low weight.

Pre-orders for the new Audi R8 Spyder will begin in summer 2016. The market launch is scheduled for late summer 2016.
