Cars with History: Volkswagen Golf CityStromer

While the seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf is on its way, let’s go back a few moments to the first and second generations of the popular German model, to the 1970s and early 1980s, when the brand was timidly experimenting with electric powertrains. And so the Volkswagen Golf CityStromer emerged.

At some point during the heyday of the first generation Golf (1974-1983), Volkswagen engineers began to weigh the idea of an electric Golf. If you thought electric cars were a 21st-century thing, think again: even during the years when the oil companies forcibly silenced every attempt at an electric car, the manufacturers were still piqued by curiosity. The first Golf CityStromers came to life as experimental models, and were sold in a limited series.

The GolfStromer’s powertrain was slightly different from what is used today to propel electric cars, but it ultimately delivered performance and range similar to what we know today. Instead of high-voltage motors, Volkswagen chose a pack of 16 gel batteries of 96 volts that supplied the 18.5-kilowatt electric motor, a range of 80 kilometres and a top speed of no more than 100 km/h.

Externally, the CityStromer was no different from the petrol and diesel Golf, and it could be charged from any 220-volt socket, reaching 80% in about an hour and a half. One of the model’s peculiarities was that it did not have a continuously variable transmission, unlike almost all electric cars today, but instead had a four-speed gearbox.

The first generation of the first electric Golf in history debuted in 1989 and the second in 1993, improved under a cooperation agreement with Siemens. The second generation produced 120 units of this little-known electric car, up to 1996; and although almost all of them were sold to companies at the time, they have changed hands over the years and many are still on the road today in the hands of private owners.
