Mercedes-Benz adds the new eActros 400 to its electric truck range
Since 2021, Mercedes-Benz has been committed to electric mobility in the heavy transport sector, starting with the first-generation eActros 300/400, which will be discontinued at the end of 2025 with the launch of this new model.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks has taken another step towards the electrification of heavy transport with the introduction of new variants of the eActros 600, presented at an event held in the French town of Molsheim. Following the successful launch of the eActros 600 in 2024, an electric truck designed for long-haul freight transport, the German manufacturer has now added the new eActros 400, a version of the eActros 600 optimised for heavy-duty distribution, to its electric truck range.
Mercedes-Benz has already started accepting orders for this new electric truck in Europe and says that the first units of the eActros 400 will begin rolling off the production line at the Wörth am Rhein plant in Germany before the end of this year.
The eActros 400 stands out for its lower weight compared to its bigger sibling, thanks to the use of two LFP battery packs instead of the three fitted to the eActros 600. This reduces the total weight of the vehicle by 1.5 tonnes
, while maintaining a payload capacity of up to 25 tonnes, which puts it on a par with diesel trucks in terms of load capacity, a key aspect for success in the logistics sector.
An eActros 600 adapted to the peculiarities of the distribution sector
This new model shares the advanced technology of the eActros 600, such as its in-house developed electric axle, along with its 800-volt architecture. The LFP cells in the battery packs are supplied by CATL, offering a total capacity of 414 kWh that allows it to travel up to 480 km under optimal conditions. This means at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and not fully charged, as is usually the case in the logistics sector. On long-distance journeys, when charged to the maximum, range will obviously be reduced. In this case, the manufacturer promises that it is capable of covering around 330 km.
When recharging the battery packs at a station with a 400 kW CCS charging point, the eActros 400 can increase the state of charge from 10 to 80 percent in 46 minutes, according to the manufacturer. Although this model is not initially expected to support charging at one megawatt, the eActros 600 will in future feature an optional MCS port.
Finally, it should be noted that the nomenclature of the eActros 400
refers to the capacity of its battery -414 kWh-, distinguishing it from the outgoing model with the same name and from the new eArocs 400, designed for urban construction transport and presented at Bauma 2025.
