Mercedes-Benz EQS, electrified luxury has arrived at the star brand

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS has become the brand’s first electric saloon. It also features Level 3 autonomous driving technology.

The Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS has arrived and is here to answer questions about luxury cars in the not-too-distant future, though they will certainly be vehicles loaded with technology. The new Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS is fully electric and features a 100 kWh battery. It is capable of delivering a total output of approximately 476 CV. On paper, the star brand has promised that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4.5 seconds. It will reach a top speed of 200 km/h and a fully electric range of up to 700 km.

Daimler has opted for a fluid yet powerful sculpted exterior, with a continuous ‘light strip‘ structure that makes the exterior design look perfect. The German carmaker describes the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQS as “sensually elegant and dramatically charged”, and regardless of what we think of its looks, it is undoubtedly one of the most interesting-looking vehicles at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The exterior features include digital light headlights, each with two holographic lens modules, integrated into the light strip mentioned above, which allows an almost unlimited number of light variations that anticipate what future Mercedes models will look like in terms of lighting configurations.

The rear is particularly innovative with 229 individual illuminated stars, while the front grille houses a light matrix consisting of 188 individual LEDs, capable of creating a three-dimensional effect. Inside, the concept draws inspiration from the world of luxury yachts, so the entire dashboard can be seen blending into the body of the front trim section, while the whole cabin appears to wrap around its occupants like the deck of a boat. This design philosophy will also be carried into future Mercedes-Benz luxury lounges.

In terms of materials, the show model comes with high-quality crystal white dynamic microfibre, used alongside maple trim with native figures made from recycled PET bottles. Artificial leather is also present, featuring a finely textured surface said to resemble nappa leather. Meanwhile, the roof lining is made of a high-quality textile created from recycled “marine waste” plastic.

Then there is the on-board technology, specifically the advanced MBUX system. Inside the Vision EQS, digital content can be experienced by immersing yourself in the entire surface of the cabin. Organically emerging screens and projection surfaces give you many display spaces, as does the smart connected lighting that glows around the occupants.

Other interior features include air vents integrated into decorative elements such as inlays, the covers of the rose gold speakers and the jewel-shaped fragrance flask enclosed in a decorative holder. As far as performance is concerned, the Vision EQS Concept comes with electric motors at both the front and rear which, together with its floor-integrated battery, help create an all-wheel-drive electric system with variable torque distribution per axle. The system’s output is somewhere north of 476 CV, with around 760 Nm of instant torque. That is enough to propel the concept from 0 to 100 km/h in under 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of more than 200 km/h.

Setting straight-line performance aside, the Vision EQS also offers an operational range of up to 700 km according to WLTP standards. The showcar will also recharge its battery to 80% in “considerably less than 20 minutes”, assuming it is using a 350 kW charger.

“With the Vision EQS technology platform, Mercedes-Benz is opting for a completely new and fully variable all-electric drive platform. In many respects, this is scalable and usable across a range of models: thanks to the modern modular system, the wheelbase and track, as well as all other system components, and especially the battery, are variable and therefore suitable for a wide range of different vehicle concepts,” the carmaker stated.

As for what it can do in terms of driver assistance, the Vision EQS show car is equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving technology, which is aimed at longer motorway journeys. However, thanks to its modular sensor systems, the level of autonomy can be extended to full automation at some point in the future.
