The electric mobility is advancing at a very rapid pace, and manufacturers are getting several models ready to offer different solutions in the form of electric vehicles. The latest one presented by the French brand Renault is the Mégane E-Tech Electric. This model is designed on the MORPHOZ prototype and partly previewed in the Mégane eVision show car, which was presented in 2020.

The model will not be ready for commercial sale until March 2022, but we know it has been designed and shaped in ElectriCity, the technology city the brand itself has established in northern France. It can be seen at the IAA Motor Show in Munich, where it can be viewed live and where some of its main features can be learned.

Electric and integrated into the digital ecosystem

The model that will be presented at this German show not only represents one more step within the brand’s electrification strategy. It is also an important commitment to connectivity in the future connected urban environment. Thanks to this technological concept, Renault can present a high-tech vehicle.

It will use a new display system called OpenR and the latest-generation multimedia system OpenR Link, designed by Google and based on Android Automotive OS. With it, the user can connect with their own Google account to make the driving and usage experience far more intense and immersive.

The manufacturing of this model at the Douai plant, right in the heart of ElectriCity, will mark the starting point for electric vehicle production at a benchmark site for the European industry. In addition, it has been conceived so that it features many elements made from recycled materials. And, at the end of its useful life, up to 95% of the vehicle can be recycled.

It is built on the CMF-EV platform, which several models from the Renault-Nissan alliance use, and which makes it easier and cheaper to manufacture electric vehicles. More than 300 patents have been filed for the development of these models, which improve the charging system, the battery, the cooling system and other elements that advance the technology applied so far.

Main features of the Mégane E-Tech Electric

Aesthetically it has a very attractive look, with elements that give it a very dynamic appearance. LED lights, both front and rear, front fins hugging the headlights, a bulging bonnet and air intakes in the front bumpers. The 20-inch wheels help create a more attractive image. Its length is 4.21 metres and the wheelbase is 2.70 metres.

The door handles remain hidden until the car detects the driver via the card and they emerge once the doors are unlocked. They return to their original position two minutes after parking, when the car starts moving and when the doors are closed.

The instrument display is 12.3 inches and the multimedia screen is 12 inches. Inside there is also an LED lighting system that creates different ambiences. It also has several storage spaces inside and the boot offers a capacity of 440 litres. The charging cables are stored in a compartment created for them, with a capacity of 22 litres.

It features two USB-C ports and a 12-volt connector, so several devices can be charged at once. The model also has the Vehicle to Grid function, so it can supply power to external batteries. As for the electric motors, two power outputs are available.

The first will offer a power of 96 kW, equivalent to 130 CV, and a maximum torque of 250 Nm. The more powerful motor will be 160 kW, equivalent to 210 CV, with a maximum torque of 300 Nm. As for the battery, one with 40 kWh will be available, offering up to 300 kilometres. The other will have a capacity of 60 kWh, allowing up to 420 kilometres, both figures measured on the WLTP cycle.
