Strong growth in electric vehicle registrations in Europe during last June

If last May’s figure for electric vehicle registrations in the European Union was already good, June was even better.

Electric vehicle registrations grew strongly in the European Union during last June. According to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), 270,557 new passenger cars with fully electric powertrains were registered in this market, which is 60.7 percent more than in the same month of the previous year. This registration figure clearly exceeds that of last May, when 203,417 units were registered.

In the first half of the year, 1,220,890 new fully electric vehicles reached European roads, an increase of 40.5 percent over the same period of 2025. Their market share, meanwhile, rose from 15.6 to 20.7 percent, meaning that roughly one in every five new passenger cars registered in the EU is now fully electric.

Three of the EU’s four main electric vehicle markets showed notable gains in the half-year: France grew 62.9 percent, Germany 48 percent and Denmark 41.2 percent. Belgium, however, recorded an increase of only 8.2 percent. These four countries account for 63 percent of all electric vehicle registrations in the European Union.

Data to consider by country

In June, Germany remained the largest individual market, with 84,057 units and growth of 78.2 percent. France followed with 55,851 vehicles and a spectacular 93.5 percent increase. Next came the Netherlands (17,257, +42.2%), Denmark (16,996, +40.3%), Italy (14,869, +86.6%) and Spain (14,224, +26.5%).

By powertrain type, conventional hybrids remain the largest group, with a 37.3 percent share in the half-year. They are followed by petrol (22.2%), battery electric (20.7%), plug-in hybrids (9.8%) and diesel (7.5%). The combined share of petrol and diesel fell from 37.8 to 29.7 percent in one year. It should be remembered that ACEA does not distinguish between full hybrids and mild hybrids, so the category also includes models whose electric component only assists the combustion engine.

As for manufacturers, Tesla, being an exclusively electric producer, offers clearer figures. In the extended area that includes the EU, EFTA and the United Kingdom, the North American brand registered 52,563 vehicles in June, 49.9 percent more than the previous year, while in the first half it reached 170,351 units, 54.6 percent above the same period of 2025.

June thus confirms the solid and steady transition of the European market toward electric mobility. Having surpassed 200,000 registrations in March, April and May, the 270,000 figure was clearly exceeded in June. Moreover, the rise in market share to 20.7 percent indicates that the growth of electric vehicles is not explained solely by the overall expansion of the market, but that these vehicles are steadily gaining ground within total registrations.
