Test drive: Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ Estate: a family car… but nothing ordinary

We test the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ Estate, a plug-in hybrid family car that combines luxury, technology and 585 CV. Comfortable and quiet in electric mode, but explosive once the six-cylinder comes into play

A family car… but nothing ordinary. Here we’re not just talking about space, comfort and practicality. We’re talking about a car that, when you press the accelerator, reminds you that beneath its elegant bodywork lies something wild. This is the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+: an Estate that combines the versatility of a grand tourer with the purity of a sports car. Can a family car really turn into an absolute beast?

This model completes the upper range of the new E-Class in estate form. It sits above the conventional versions, but below the future E 63. And it represents a before and after: it is the first plug-in hybrid E 53, blending an AMG six-cylinder with real electrification and a very serious level of performance.

The E 53 Estate represents AMG’s bet on a car capable of bringing three worlds together in one: family utility, executive comfort and high-end performance. With its 4MATIC+ plug-in hybrid configuration, it offers power, refinement and versatility for everyday use, family trips or spirited driving

Design: aggressive, elegant and with AMG character

At the front, the AMG Panamericana grille stands out, with vertical bars and a more aggressive design than the conventional versions. The headlights are DIGITAL LIGHT or MULTIBEAM LED depending on configuration, capable of projecting patterns onto the road and adjusting the beam in milliseconds. Several wheel options are available: as standard it offers 19- and 20-inch options, but the most spectacular unit fits 21-inch AMG wheels. Aesthetically, the E 53 Estate mixes elegance with sporty character.

  • Length: approx. 4.96 metres
  • Width: 1.88 m without mirrors
  • Height: around 1.50 m
  • Wheelbase: 2.96 m

At the rear, however, we find slim LED tail lights, a larger AMG diffuser and twin exhaust outlets. If you choose the AMG Night Package, these elements come in a gloss black finish.

6-cylinder AMG + electricity (and plenty of sense)

The heart of the car is a 3.0-litre turbo inline-six engine, supported by an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The combustion engine derives from the previous generation, but with improvements that allow it to reach 449 CV compared with the previous 435 CV. The electric motor adds an extra 163 CV, achieving a combined output of 585 CV as standard, rising to 612 CV if you add the AMG Dynamic Plus package. Peak torque is around 750 Nm, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in about 3.8 seconds, depending on configuration and wheels. It is paired with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G gearbox, with 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, capable of sending torque to the rear axle or splitting it between both as required.

A “real” PHEV

This E 53 is an authentic plug-in hybrid. It has a 21.2 kWh battery that allows it to run up to 100 km in fully electric mode, ideal for reducing consumption and emissions and earning the DGT’s 0-emission label. This battery accepts AC charging at 11 kW and DC charging at 60 kW, which is not bad at all, as it allows charging from 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes.

Another difference from the conventional versions is the suspension and track width, which is wider in this version, and which uses coil springs at both front and rear instead of the air springs found on the rear axle of the base versions.

Interior: technology without giving up luxury

Inside, we find one of the most advanced interiors in its segment. The E 53 Estate can be fitted with the MBUX Superscreen, with a central display and another for the passenger. There is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster where we can choose different display options from the steering wheel. A 14.4-inch central multimedia screen and a passenger screen, also 12.3 inches, with which we can send information to the driver, adjust the comfort settings or even play music through Bluetooth headphones.

The dashboard combines technology and luxury, with configurable ambient lighting in 64 colours, aluminium, wood or fibre trim, and AMG details throughout the cabin. The front seats are sporty yet very comfortable, with full electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and even a cinema-style function, which is not quite as comfortable as the massage, but it does something.

The rear seats offer good space for adults. The Estate version is more generous than the saloon, especially in headroom. Boot: 460 litres in this plug-in hybrid version. It is not huge because of the battery, but more than sufficient for family use.

Dynamics: two cars in one

On the road, this E 53 offers the AMG Dynamic Select modes: Electric, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Battery Hold. The AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension combines body control and comfort perfectly, using electronics that manage damper stiffness in milliseconds. The steering is more direct than in a standard E-Class, with a sportier feel without losing smoothness. And in this case, we feel that the high-performance AMG brakes are essential in a car weighing more than 2,400 kilos, with ventilated discs and optional drilled versions.

Another detail worth highlighting is that 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive distributes torque continuously. In sport modes it favours the rear axle for more dynamic behaviour. Energy regeneration under braking has several levels, and the management between electric and combustion motors is very smooth. Homologated consumption starts from below 3 litres per 100 km when the battery is charged. In real-world use it depends enormously on driving style, but it remains one of the most efficient AMG models in history. With the battery depleted, and on the road, we have recorded consumption of around 8 litres per 100 km, which is not bad at all for its weight and performance.

In Comfort mode, the car is smooth, quiet and very refined. The suspension filters well and ride quality is remarkable. But activate Sport+ and the other side appears: immediate response, thrust from standstill thanks to the electric motor, and a more forceful sound thanks to the AMG Performance Sound system. Despite its dimensions, the car feels controlled and stable. It is not a radical sports car, but it conveys confidence and composure at very serious speeds.

Verdict

This is its strongest point. It is a car you can use every day. You can drive in electric mode around town, with zero noise and no local emissions. But at the same time, you have a spacious, comfortable and luxurious estate for long journeys. And when you need it, an AMG that accelerates faster than many sports cars. It is, quite literally, a car for everything.

It is not the most radical AMG. Nor the most efficient hybrid. And yet… it is one of the most complete cars on the market.

A model capable of offering:

  • More than 585 CV of power
  • Practicality in electric mode
  • Technologically luxurious interior
  • Incredible boot and plenty of space
  • And sporty sensations whenever you want them

A family car that gives up nothing. And that, today, is very hard to find.
